Rise Against have released a video for “Talking To Ourselves,” a song from their Nowhere Generation album.
The visual shows a group of people in an art gallery staying glued to their phones and not looking at the wall, which features canvases of QR codes instead of paintings.
“Talking To Ourselves is about watching yourself and the people around you fall into complacency,” Rise Against says. “Despite your best efforts to get people’s attention, it feels like no one is listening.”
“Sometimes we feel the urge to do something crazy, to disturb the peace, to jostle the world around us awake,” the band adds. “Our actions might be seen as out of the ordinary, but they are acts of desperation when all else failed.”
“The intention behind the video was to yet again shed light on us as a society and to expand on the feeling that we have progressively lost our humanity,” says director Ryan Valdez.
“In our video, the QR codes represent little windows to the world outside of our bubbles, only to be dismissed and swiped onto the next event. It feels so bleak,” he adds. “Heartbreaking headlines are so disposable and just another hashtag buried in the news of celebrity gossip and trending dances. As we watch and Tim sings ‘Are we talking to ourselves,’ I hope it reminds us to be human, listen, speak up and do better.”
