The Voice’s Rita Ora ‘completely horrified’ after mistaking her husband Taika Waititi’s ethnicity and calling the Māori filmmaker ‘half a Samoan’

Rita Ora is ‘horrified’ after making an awkward mistake about her husband Taika Waititi’s ethnicity during an episode of The Voice Australia.

The British pop star, 32, was trying to persuade a contestant from Christchurch that he should join her team because she was ‘married to half a Samoan man’.

However, her husband, celebrated Māori filmmaker Taika Waititi, has never identified as Samoan, Stuff reported.

According to New Idea, Rita is ‘completely horrified’ that viewers think she confused her husband’s identity.

‘She’s completely horrified that people think she screwed up Taika’s family heritage,’ the source claimed.

The source added that Rita ‘is so worried about disappointing’ Taika as the couple begin their married life together.

During the episode which aired last week, Rita who is on the judging panel alongside Guy Sebastian, Jason Derulo and Jessica Mauboy, was trying to convince Marley Sola from Christchurch that he should join her team.

Marley was discussing his background with Derulo, revealing his connection to the Samoan Seventh Day Adventist Church and his part-Samoan heritage.

Derulo also pointed out his own Samoan tattoos and mentioned a Samoan security guard.

It was at this point that Ora chimed in, ‘I’m married to half a Samoan man, so…’

However, eagle-eyed viewers were quick to notice that Ora seemed to have gotten her information mixed.

In fact, his heritage is a mix of Māori, Russian Jewish, Irish, and French Canadian roots.

He often refers to himself as a ‘Polynesian Jew,’ celebrating his diverse lineage.

It seems Ora likely meant to use the term ‘Polynesian,’ which encompasses various indigenous peoples of the Polynesian region, rather than ‘Samoan,’ which specifically refers to the indigenous population of the Samoan islands.
