Dove Cameron’s Intricate Met Gala Dress Took 600 Hours to Create
Dove Cameron had a creative take on this year’s Met Gala inspiration, but you might have missed it at first glance. With a theme like “Gilded Glamour,” many anticipated the red carpet to be full of gold palettes, heavy materials, and grandeur — an exercise in the type of excess that characterized the gilded age. So, when Cameron showed up in a delicate, skeletal gown by Iris van Herpen, complete with intricate cutouts and wild structural details, she didn’t initially seem to be on theme.
But fans on Twitter say there’s more to this look than originally meets the eye. One user pulled up a photo of a dress from the actual gilded age, outlining the stiff structure of the corset and the dramatic arch of the bustle in white, and compared it to the boning details Cameron wore on her arms and the outside of the dress.
The New York Times reported that the dress took a full 600 hours to make. Cameron discussed some of her favorite parts of the outfit, saying, “It plays into the theme of ‘Gilded Age’ in the way that it’s incredibly structured, all about shape, but it’s also honoring Iris’s unique vision.” To Cameron, this look is a big step for her, not just because it’s her first Met Gala, but because it represents a transformation of sorts.
“At this moment in time for me, with my music and with this rebirth I’ve been having, Iris, as a creative, and I are very matched,” she said. “I’ve shed some of my fear, and I’ve kind of created my own little world for myself as a human and as an artist.”
