The Queen wore a very appropriate royal brooch when opening the Scottish Parliament on Saturday, in what was a glittering public appearance. Her Majesty travelled from Balmoral Castle to Edinburgh for the opening of the sixth session of the Scottish Parliament. She was accompanied by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for the event, otherwise known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay when in Scotland.
The Queen chose a very appropriate brooch for the occasion.
She wore Queen Mary’s Diamond Thistle Brooch, a long thistle decorated with diamonds and flanked by a pair of thistle leaves.
The brooch belonged to the Queen’s beloved grandmother, Queen Mary.
The Queen has been wearing the jewel more often in recent years.
The Duchess of Cornwall matched with her mother-in-law, and also wore a brooch paying tribute to Scotland’s national flower.
She wore the Queen Mother’s Diamond Thistle Brooch, which Camilla has worn on more than one occasion since joining the Royal Family in 2005.
There was also one more very important royal jewel present in the Debating Chamber during the opening of Parliament.
The Crown of Scotland, the oldest existing piece of crown jewellery in Britain, was carried in by the Duke of Hamilton, the Hereditary Crown Bearer.
The Queen’s thistle brooch perfectly complemented her emerald green outfit.
The unique brooch made her outfit stand out for its significance to Scotland.
The Queen has worn the same piece on many Scottish occasions as a mark of respect.
The thistle has become a symbol of the country and it is even a flower that is embroidered into the lace of many royal wedding dresses for this reason.
The diamond brooch stood out beautifully against Her Majesty’s choice of green coat, which she wore with a matching hat, black gloves, and her signature handbag.
Her Majesty addressed the room at the event and her speech included praise for the parliament during this “trying period” but also referred to the “difference of opinion” within the room.
As well as her official words, the Queen spoke personally about her affiliation with the country.
She said: “I have spoken before of my deep and abiding affection for this wonderful country, and of the many happy memories Prince Philip and I always held of our time here.
“It is often said that it is the people that make a place, and there are few places where this is truer than in Scotland, as we have seen in recent times.”
Prince William shares his grandmother’s love for Scotland, and he got a mention in the speech too.
“Following my grandson’s time as Lord High Commissioner, Prince William has told me many heartening stories that he heard first hand of people and communities across Scotland uniting to protect and care for those who are isolated or vulnerable,” she said.
Inside the Scottish Parliament Building in Holyrood, the Queen was greeted by Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
The Queen also paid tribute to “local heroes” from across Scotland who worked to help their communities during the pandemic.
Royal fans took to social media to express their love for the royal pair’s brooches.
Instagram user Sarah Rosina said: “What a beautiful brooch the Queen is wearing.”
Royal fan Tiffany Collins on Instagram added: “She is grace personified! I love that beautiful brooch.”
An Instagram account called sanjose1956 wrote: “Her Majesty looks beautiful in that colour! And the brooch is exquisite.”
Margaret Vulcan agreed, saying: “Oh my! Look at that stunning diamond thistle brooch against that magnificent deep coloured wool coat. They all look splendid.”
