This $40 Crochet Sweater Doubles as the Perfect Beach Cover-Up

I peruse Old Navy’s new arrivals section with the enthusiasm of a kid in a candy store. After all, you never know what newness is going to drop from month to month. As classic and timeless as the brand is, it occasionally releases products inspired by current trends, à la the Long-Sleeve Cropped Crochet Sweater ($40). Everyone’s embracing crochet right now, be it in the form of summery clothing or accessories. (Either way, you can’t go wrong.) Needless to say, I couldn’t resist scooping up this sweater. I added it to my cart in my usual medium size and opted for the Cloudy White color over the orange style — but hey, that one’s cute, too.

What I Like About This Sweater

One thing I was worried about when I pressed “add to cart” was whether or not this sweater was going to feel low-quality, like the cotton crochet would fall apart after a few wears. But I was so relieved to find out that it’s really thick and durable.

I also love the style. It features long drop-shoulder sleeves and elasticized rib-knit cuffs that, in my opinion, are extra details that make it look expensive. And the cropped fit is perfect for tucking the front into a pair of shorts this summer.

What Occasion Is This Sweater Good For?

One of the biggest things that drew me to this sweater is the fact that it’s really versatile. On days that aren’t scorching hot this summer, I look forward to wearing it over a fitted crop top or a neutral-color sports bra teamed with a pair of denim shorts or jeans. Dressed up with the right accessories, I think it could even be a great going-out top, be it for drinks with friends or date night.

But I’m most excited to wear this as a beach cover-up because I think it nails that laid-back aesthetic. Plus, its open-knit style gives me the opportunity to show off my favorite new bikini.

What’s Worth Noting About This Sweater

At the time of writing, this sweater has mostly five-star reviews, aside from a shopper who deemed the sleeves too long. Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m 5’9, but I found that they fit perfectly. One thing to note is that the sleeves are slightly oversize in width; I’d say that’s to ensure it looks casual and doesn’t fit tightly against your arms.

Another thing: I know I said earlier that this sweater is really durable, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be mindful of the way you wash it. Per the brand’s instructions, you should machine wash it on cold, gentle cycle, and lay it flat to dry.

Would I Recommend This Sweater?

I highly recommend this sweater! I know I’m going to be reaching for it over and over again this summer, whether for a casual WFH day or a trip to the pool. Even my fiancé did a double-take when I stepped out in it. It’s certainly unordinary — and right on trend.
