From cancer battles to life-changing injuries from reality TV shows and success on Strictly Come Dancing, the fortunes of those who have appeared on the show have been varied to say the least.
Meanwhile there have been plenty of stars who went on to become A-listers on the Hollywood scene.

THEN: Patsy Kensit starred as ward sister Faye Byrne in the soap for four years, before quitting Holby City to spend more time with her family.
After problems in her then year-old marriage to DJ Jeremy Healy, she decided the tough filming schedule was too much.
‘I have had a fantastic time playing Faye but I felt it was the right time to move on. I will really miss the cast and crew, but not the long hours,’ she told The Sun.
‘It has been lots of fun but very hard work.’

Patsy Kensit returned to Holby City for 20th anniversary special alongside Luke Roberts… almost ten years after she left the show
Patsy wanted to work on her fourth marriage, after the couple’s intense workloads caused friction.
Reports of trouble in the union emerged in February that year, after Healy walked out.
At the time, Patsy’s spokesman said: ‘They are experiencing difficulties and are trying to work things out.’
Patsy’s previous husbands are Oasis singer Liam Gallagher,Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr and Big Audio Dynamite keyboard playerDan Donovan.
She also wanted to spend more time with children Lennon, from her marriage to Gallagher, and James, from her marriage to Kerr.
Patsy’s character wasn’t killed off, leaving room for her to return – which happened in 2019, when she reprised her role as Faye Morton after nine years away from the medical drama.
The actress was joined by her former co-star Luke Roberts, who played Joseph Byrne once more for one episode to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary.
Faye and Joseph’s return to the hospital wards wasn’t without its woes, though, as the former come up against her nemesis and former love rival Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel) once they arrived.
NOW: Patsy was slammed by viewers who claimed she appeared ‘bored’ and ‘uninterested’ during an appearance on Richard Osman’s House of Games last year.
The actress, 52, was a contestant on the general knowledge show alongside Nihal Arthanayake, Jake Humphrey and Mae Martin, but sparked accusations from viewers that she looked like she didn’t want to take part.
It seemed that Patsy also regretted agreeing to appear on the show as she ended that night’s programme by joking she was going to ‘kill her agent.’
Many fans were quick to point out she barely made an effort to press the buzzer and answer the questions.

Patsy also recently revealed she’s suffering from empty nest syndrome during lockdown since her children have moved out.
The soap star has two adult sons, James, 27, with Simple Minds frontman Jim Kerr, and Lennon, 21, with Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher.
The thespian admitted she has been feeling an ‘ache’ in her heart as her sons have grown up and moved out.
The media personality told OK! magazine: ‘It’s so painful I can’t tell you. Everyone’s emotional at the moment, aren’t they? Every day it’s been really hard.
‘I don’t let the boys know that but I know they feel it because they’re constantly checking in. They have their own lives but I’m not going to lie, there’s an ache in my heart.’
The Strictly star was married first to musician Dan Donovan from 1988 to 1991, before being wed to Scottish singer Jim from 1992 to 1996.
Patsy was in a marriage with rock star Liam between 1997 and 2000, during which the artist fathered Molly, 21, with Lisa Moorish.
The blonde went on to have a relationship with DJ Jeremy Healy, tied the knot in 2009 and got divorced a year later.
Eight years ago, Patsy was rushed into hospital to have an emergency hysterectomy after two potentially cancerous tumours were discovered. Doctors feared ovarian cancer.
In a recent interview, she said: ‘I’m very grateful for my life. It got me out of where I came from. I broke the poverty cycle. Of course, I miss having a hug and being in a room with somebody in lockdown but right now I feel very strong and happy. I’m not a distressed woman who’s crying out for love. I’m very fulfilled.’

The actress eventually left in November 2013 and began segueing to become a radio presenter.

Appearing on The Jump in February 2016, Tina was involved in the horrific crash, when crew members failed to evacuate the landing zone while she was practicing a jump for the reality show.
She dislocated her elbow, broke her arm in two places, and was forced to undergo a gruelling knee surgery – and was left using a crutch for almost a year after the collision.
The channel apologised to the TV star after the incident, blaming ‘human error’ for the accident.
They said at the time: ‘Tina’s fall was caused by simple human error when members of the ground crew failed to clear the outrun.

‘All those involved have been spoken to and extra procedures have now been put in place by the producers to ensure that this will not happen again.’
Tina was still feeling the impact of her injuries a year later, appearing on Loose Women and explaining the debilitating injuries have not just affected her physically, but in her romantic life with husband Oliver Wheeler.
The North London native explained: ‘It’s been a tough year but I’m much much better than I was last year.
‘I still have a long way to go. We thought it was just the arm at first but then I came back and had the scan and it was my shoulder and my knee.’
Only making matters worse, she explained that the repercussions of her recovery had almost been as bad as the injuries – with her even losing her hair and being unable to brush her teeth in light of the pain.
She said: ‘I had to have three operations but they couldn’t be done at the same time so for about 18 months.
‘I think the lowest was when I couldn’t brush my teeth. I was on big, strong, painkillers for about six months and then my hair started falling out.
‘I was on Tramadol for six months and had a bad allergy to it where my hair started falling out. Then I had my knee done in September… they gave me a new knee basically.’
Only recently, Tina revealed that she is ready to return to television work.
The actress stepped away from the acting world to raise her two children with Oliver – Orson, 10, and Olivia, 12. Tina also has daughter Isabella, 21, with ex-husband Steve Wallington.
She said: ‘I miss it [acting] terribly. I miss it so much. There’s something later in the year I’m discussing with a producer TV-wise.’

The Scot struggled to make a mark early in the competition but the couple’s romantic routine to the theme from Doctor Zhivago caught the attention of the judges in week three and they began to refer to Joe as a ‘dark horse’.
He later said it was a terrifying experience, saying: ‘I’ve never known fear like it. But that fear was the best possible reason to do it. If you’re scared, it means you’ve put yourself in a new place away from everything that’s comfortable and it’s how you find new doors opening up.’

REBEKAH GIBBS
Rebekah Gibbs, born in Devon, starred in Casualty and Holby City for two years before learning she had cancer. She died in 2014 in a hospice
THEN: Born in Torquay, Devon, Rebekah attended the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in Sidcup, whose alumni include Spice Girl Mel C.
She appeared in the West End musicals Starlight Express, Grease and Fame before landing the part of Nina Farr, a paramedic, in Casualty and Holby City in 2004.
She left in 2006 to start a family, and went into healthy living overdrive; she was training for a half-marathon when she found out she was expecting her daughter Gigi.
NOW: Rebekah first noticed a lump at Christmas in 2007, when she was seven and a half months pregnant.
Initially she thought it was the baby moving, but was horrified when she realised it was a walnut-sized mass in her left breast.
Anxious that it might be a tumour, she went first to her GP then a locum doctor. Both of them initially told her that she had a blocked milk duct.
Speaking to the Mail in 2009, she said: ‘The private consultant I [eventually] saw said he believed it was cancer even before he ran a single test.
‘At that moment it was as though a bomb had exploded inside my world, destroying every certainty. I could barely think.
‘Although Gigi was crying with hunger, the last thing I wanted to do was to get out my breast and start feeding her, knowing there was something alien and poisonous growing in there, but I knew she needed my milk.
‘It was surreal; I was only 35, with a newborn baby. I couldn’t have imagined that something so awful could happen.’
After chemotherapy and radiotherapy she was given the all-clear after five years in 2013.
But a few months later she had a seizure while on holiday in Devon. She was taken to hospital and was told the cancer had spread to her brain and lungs.
She died in 2014 in a hospice.
Poignantly, in a book she wrote about her struggle with the disease, Gibbs wrote a moving open letter to Gigi, telling her how much she loves her.
‘The book is part of my preparations for Gigi’s life, with or without me,’ she said.
‘If I can’t be there, all I want is for her and Ash to be happy.’But for now, I have to concentrate on how much joy and fun I can cram into our remaining time together, because I have no way of knowing how long I’ve got.’

She also played sex-party organiser Anna in the hit Netflix show White Lines, about an unsolved murder in Ibiza.
But the mother-of-two, 44, revealed in 2020 that the programme had been axed after just one series to the disappointment of fans. She made the revelation during an online Q&A for Theatre Royal Haymarket, according to The Sun.
Asked about the future of White Lines, Angela said: ‘Will there be a series two of White Lines? I don’t think so. I wish there was but it’s very quiet on the White Lines hotline.
‘My gut feeling is that it was left in a place where it is nicely tied up. I think that is where it is going to stay. Sorry to say.’
More recently, Angela featured in the 12-part YouTube series Dun Breedin’, written by Benidorm actress Julie Graham.
Eastenders actress Tamzin Outhwaite, Alison Newman and Tracy Ann Oberman also star in the programme which was recorded in the stars’ homes with family even acting as crew members to help film.

In January, it was announced she would once again reprise her role as Kim for a new series of Waterloo Road, with her character now promoted to Head Teacher.
PHYLLIS LOGAN
Phyllis Logan played Muriel McKendrick (pictured right), known as a strict department head and consultant surgeon with a serious personality on Holby City

The film is reportedly set for a Christmas release date, and during an interview on Lorraine, Phyllis opened up about how the Downton Abbey 2 cast are managing with filming with Covid-19 restrictions in place.
The actress told how the cast have to wear ‘peculiar masks’ with a perspex screen around the neck, with the PPE known on set as ‘the actors’ cone of shame.’
Explaining how everyone managed to keep safe on set amid the pandemic, Phyllis explained: ‘We’re being COVID tested about three times a week.
‘I’ve already had my second jab, hurrah! Lots of us had the jab and I’ve had my two. You must be number one at least!’
Describing how they protect each other, she continued: ‘We have to wear these peculiar masks. It’s like a perspex screen that goes up but it’s attached to a collar that goes around your neck.
‘We call it the actor’s cone of shame – it’s really weird walking about like that! It’s because you can’t put a normal mask on and wig. The men have ones that fit on like a mask.’

The couple now share five children between them: Lisa’s adopted daughter Billie, 15, and John’s grown-up sons Casper and Marselle, and teenagers from another relationship, Jonah, 17, and Lulu, 15.
‘Our kids have the best food life you can imagine,’ Lisa told The Sun. ‘Whatever they ask for tea, they get. They will be like, ‘Can we have Korean fried chicken?’, ‘Could you make chicken Milanese, or tacos?’
‘Anything they want gets made because John and I both love cooking. And if we don’t know how to make it, we’ll find out. But John knows pretty much everything anyway.
‘The kids don’t know how lucky they are when it comes to food. My stepkids call me ‘the feeder’ and ‘pushover Lisa’.’

But his biggest triumph, next to Holby City, came in 2008, when he lifted Strictly Come Dancing’s glitterball trophy.
The series was perhaps Strictly’s most memorable, with the hopeless John Sergeant dragging Kristina Rihanoff round the dancefloor in the paso doble before withdrawing ten weeks in because of a general furore that such a terrible dancer might actually win.
It also became one of the most controversial years of the competition when the dance-off in the semi-final had to be cancelled because two of the remaining three dancers tied on votes.
Not only did Tom delay his wedding by a day mid-series so he could stay in Strictly, but he’s previously said waltzing off with the trophy ultimately led to his many successful roles in the West End.
‘Winning Strictly with Camilla Dallerup first got me the leading role in the West End musical Top Hat. I didn’t even have to audition, which is a good job otherwise they’d have realised how long it takes me to learn steps,’ he laughs.
‘You have to be a pro to dance on the West End stage, but it’s Strictly that gave me the tools to do a big musical.’
He recently appeared in a touring version of the play Dial M For Murder as Tony Wendice.

He commented, ‘I wouldn’t have stayed so long if it hadn’t been a great place to work, and leaving will be like leaving home – a place where there is warmth and a welcome, a place to which you can always return.’
NOW: Alongside his day job in Holby City, Hugh has also appeared in Doctor Who and Star Wars.
Hugh has a big presence on Twitter and his bio states: ‘Actor. Director. Writer. African, British, European. More to come.’

The television personality said her ordeal at the hands of Toraq Wyngard, 53, had been an ‘incredibly stressful time’.
Wyngard admitted stalking the Hollyoaks actress, causing serious alarm or distress, between September 18 last year and February 11, ahead of a trial at Chester Crown Court on Monday, a spokesman for Cheshire Police said.

Denise explained how her father had experienced dips in his health before being taken into hospital, and admitted: ‘We felt we’d loved him back to health.’

However, when a doctor turned around and told him that was ‘clinically and morbidly obese,’ he went on a quick downwards spiral and was rushed into theatre, before dying on the operating table.
