Ben Affleck's Movie 'Deep Water' Got Pulled From Theatrical Release

Update December 10, 2021: Entertainment Weekly reports that Disney has pulled Deep Water from its release schedule. It's unknown whether or not the movie will hit theaters at all, since it had been moved multiple times. The studio didn't issue any comment as to why the movie has been wiped from its slate. Disney acquired the film when it purchased 20th Century Fox in 2020 to form Disney's 20th Century Studios.

Previously: Billed as an "erotic thriller," Deep Water is based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith (she also wrote The Talented Mr. Ripley) and was supposed to hit theaters in 2020. But thanks to COVID-19 derailing just about every single movie released this year, Deep Water is being pushed to August 13, 2021 — and then pushed again to January 14, 2022.

The movie isn't just making headlines for its pedigree, however — it's also the film that brought together stars Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, who started dating after they met on set.

Here's what you need to know about one of next year's most anticipated releases.

What is Deep Water about?

Director Adrian Lyne is following up on 2002's Unfaithful with Deep Water, according to Deadline. Lyne is known for projects that blend sex, power, and suspense, with past works including Fatal AttractionIndecent Proposal, and 9 1/2 Weeks. Writers Zack Helm (Stranger Than Fiction) and Sam Levinson (Euphoria) adapted Highsmith's novel. The movie has been in the works since 2013.

Affleck and de Armas play a married couple, Vic and Melinda Van Allen, that have an arrangement that lets them both have extramarital relationships. Of course, things aren't that straightforward, because the film explores their crumbling relationship and a string of mysterious deaths that happen around them.

Where was Deep Water filmed?

The film shot on location in New Orleans back in 2019, though there were reshoots in late 2020.

Who’s in it?

Jacob Elordi, from Netflix's Kissing Booth series, also stars in the film and said that the project was one of his favorite films to date. He also said that Affleck and Lyne were "titans of film."

American Horror Story alum Finn Wittrock, House of Cards's Kristen Connolly, and Dash Mihok from Ray Donovan also appear.

When does Deep Water Release?

Deep Water is expected to release on August 13, 2021.
