‘Christmas shopping last minute was a nightmare – I might do it later next year’

A busy mum who had a nightmare doing her Christmas shopping last minute has now said she might leave it even later next year.

Amanda Su Brown, 36, thought leaving her quest for gifts until December 18 was the perfect way to save her money and stress.

However, it all fell apart when she didn’t manage to get started until 2pm, then had a Five Guys and some of the shops had already closed.

The Ayrshire entrepreneur confessed that her visits to Starbucks and Five Guys didn’t help as she ended up going home without getting vital presents.

In a TikTok video, that gained more than 100 likes, she said: “I probably could have planned it a lot better.

"People were having panic attacks on my behalf when I told them what I was doing.

"But it was a way to cut out loads of hassle. I don’t want to draw out my shopping across weeks and weeks. I just wanted to get in and get it all done in one go.”

She explained that she thought it was a good idea to wait until the weekend before Christmas because her son, aged six, changes his mind constantly.

So Amanda set out on Sunday and headed to Silverburn Shopping Centre in Glasgow and started to hit problems as soon as she arrived.

Amanda explained: “I went in for a Five Guys and when I came out just about everything was closed.

"The only place that was left open was Marks and Spencer and they didn’t really have what I wanted."

She headed home to finish her shopping online – which is risky business at the last minute at the best of times – and hit more issues as some wouldn't be delivered until after the holiday season.

Amanda ended up spending 10 hours looking for gifts online and managed to get everything she needed.

However, the ordeal has not put her off starting late as she said: "I wound up getting some big bargains. I saved a lot of money doing it this way.

"Next year I think I’ll leave it until even later in the week to take advantage of the sales.”
