To help with your strategy, we recently spoke to Anthony Morris, winner of Game 3, and asked him how he walked away with £34,450…

Dream Team: Congratulations Anthony, have you decided how you will spend the money?

Anthony Morris: I think my wife’s done that for me! I’m in my mid-fifties so for me it’s 18 months closer to retirement from my job as a postman. And it will probably go towards a new car too.

DT: What tactics did you employ to win Selector?

AM: Originally the idea was going to be to pick whoever was playing Fulham. But then as I kept going through each week, I thought I’d better get a bit more serious about it. I tried to use the weaker teams earlier if possible, but that was only if they were playing against the bottom three teams or playing at home.

DT: Was it a conscious decision to keep Liverpool back so long [until week 12]?

AM: I couldn’t believe it either! But I saw I still had them left and thought ‘When do I pick them?’ Even against West Ham I wasn’t too sure because Liverpool were on a bad run and West Ham were playing decent. So it was still a dodgy one to do but it worked.

DT: What were the hairiest moments you had?

AM: In the final game when Aston Villa scored late on against West Ham – who I’d picked – that made things a bit hairy. And there was one occasion I changed my mind, which was when I picked Liverpool against West Ham. I’d originally thought Fulham might get a result against West Brom but someone at work told me that Sam Allardyce had read the riot act to his players the game before, so I changed my mind.

What’s clear from Anthony’s approach is that the form of the team your backed side are up against is just as important as the team you select — picking mid-table teams to win against Fulham allowed him to save a big gun like Liverpool for crunch time.

He also exhibited an awareness of narrative and morale.

Perhaps most crucially, his gut instinct was razor sharp!

If you think you can emulate Anthony’s success then sign-up for Game 5 and start devising your strategy.
