Frankenstein £2 coin: how much is it worth?

FINDING a Frankenstein coin in your wallet isn't a scary surprise, as the commemorative £2 could be worth more than you think.

The Frankenstein £2 is worth more than its cash value to some coin collectors.

The coin was issued by The Royal Mint in 2018 to celebrate the £200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's famous novel Frankenstein.

Frankenstein, which was published in 1818, is the story of a scientist who creates a monster.

The coin was designed by Thomas Doherty and features the word Frankenstein in a gothic font.

Other coins can attract high prices at auction, like the Flopsy Bunny 50p, which sold for a whopping £50.

Check out the our round-up of the rarest coins you could find in your change, which could be worth up to £400.

How much is the Frankenstein £2 coin worth?

The £2 Frankenstein coin is not in general circulation so it's a rare find.

However, it is still legal tender, meaning it could have snuck into your wallet.

That means it's worth even more to coin collectors if you do manage to spot one.

A £2 Frankenstein coin sold on eBay for £62 in January, with 11 bidders battling to buy it.

That coin came in a commemorative box with all of its original packaging, which helps to boost the value.

We found another coin, without a box, which sold for £26 in December.

Be wary of fakes online – and keep in mind that on eBay a buyer could pull out, which means the coin won't have sold for the price it says it has.

You can check your change with experts like Coin Hunter or The Royal Mint though – they'll tell you if something's the real deal or not.
