How to survive Mercury Retrograde

Mercury Retrograde is back this month, starting May 29, 2021 and lasting until June 22, 2021 – so that’s three weeks of possible upheaval and crossed wires.

All you can do is brace yourself, because this astrological event is a bit of a whirlwind.

But we’ve got you covered, so you can navigate these rocky waters.

Here’s what it means and how to get through it in one piece.

What does Mercury in retrograde mean?

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and takes only 88 days to go around it, making it a super speedy planet, which is a major part of its energy (i.e. speed).

Mercury influences the mind. It’s the messenger (represented by Hermes in Greek mythology) and the planetary representative of communication and travel.

Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo (both clever signs, with plenty to say, who love travelling). Mercury is a cool planetary influence, but it’s not all roses.

Several times a year, Mercury goes retrograde. This means it appears to go backwards in the skies. It isn’t real, though, it’s just an optical illusion because Mercury’s shorter orbit makes it look like it hustles past Earth, slows down and then moves in a backwards loop.

Even so, this optical illusion has a powerful impact on life on earth.

When is Mercury in retrograde in 2021?

This year’s Mercury Retrogrades are…

  • January 30 to February 21
  • May 20 to June 22
  • September 27 to October 18

What is the impact of Mercury Retrograde?

So, Mercury rules over communication, travel, messages, information and intellect – which means you can expect ~backwards energy~ (i.e. delays, setbacks, issues, gremlins, mix-ups) in all of those areas.

If you have travel plans booked, then make sure you’re insured, fully researched, and have a plan B, because things could go wobbly.

Work can be tricky at this time too, because so much of our work relies on smooth communication.

Technology can play up too, causing unforeseen problems across the board.

In short, you’ve gotta’ brace for a tricky time of it, and maybe not schedule anything too significant or important during this time.

How so survive Mercury Retrograde:

Avoid things like major travel, difficult conversations with people about subjects that are tricky anyway (relationship issues, pay rises, family squabbles, landlord negotiations etc).

Add in wriggle time to your major plans if/when you can, so that if there are setbacks or delays then you’re not out of time.

Back up all of your technology, save emails, write important stuff down on paper, make sure you have a plan B.

Use this time to de-clutter! Lessening the load, rather than adding to it, is the perfect retrograde activity.

If you can chill, do. While the cosmic world outside is frantic and chaotic, turn your home into a personal sanctuary.

Candles, crystals, flowers, low lighting, cosy corners… take refuge and chill. And get ready to burst back into action come June 23.
