A first-time mother has revealed several dangerous reasons why she’ll never let her baby wear a headband.

British mum Katie Jones, 28, took to TikTok to share the details of a frightening incident involving her and husband Rabeeh Moudallal’s seven-month old baby Aria, while she was wearing a headband.

She said during a routine drive home, Aria’s headband slipped from the top of her head to the front of her eyes, effectively covering her vision.

The parenting influencer added that wearing headpieces for her daughter was now a ‘big no’, especially because it could also cause ‘suffocation’.

Katie’s advice was welcomed by fellow parents, who say they’ve also noticed similar dangers.

Katie Jones, 28, took to TikTok to reveal several dangerous reasons why she’ll never let her baby, Aria, wear a headband

Katie recalled a terrifying incident when Aria’s headband slipped from the top of her head to the front of her eyes, effectively covering her vision

She explained: ‘Here’s two reasons why I stopped putting headbands on my baby.

‘The first one was enough for me to stop, and the second one is something I learnt recently so I thought I would share.

‘They are unsafe without supervision.

‘There are risks that you would not associate with certain things especially being a first-time mum.

Katie went on to detail the horrifying moment her daughter’s headband slipped down to her eyes.

She said both a rear mirror and sheer luck were to thank for saving baby Aria, as she was the only other person in the car.

‘You can imagine the panic I went through’ said Katie.

‘As your little one shifts and moves about, especially when they’re sleeping, the elastic can become a real danger to them.

Obviously it’s your personal choice but it’s a big no from me since this happened 😭 #babytok #babysafety

Katie’s advice was welcomed by fellow parents, who say they’ve also noticed similar dangers.

‘It can cause suffocation and it can cause strangulation.

‘If that headband had creeped down just a little bit more, that could have blocked her breathing’.

The mother also spoke on the comfort of little tots while wearing the ‘tight’ headpieces.

She asked her followers to consider how many times they’d gotten a ‘headache’ after wearing a headband, and suggested that babies were also at risk.

She added: ‘They’re uncomfortable and babies can’t tell us this. In those first like six to nine months, your baby’s head is going to double.

‘So it’s not something you want to be putting on the baby when their head is growing.

‘This isn’t a debate on whether you should or should not put headbands on your baby. Of course it is personal choice.

‘I just thought I would spread a bit of awareness about the potential hazards of doing so when baby is sleeping, whether that’s anywhere in the house or in a car seat’.

She also advised that adjusting the ‘looseness’ of a headband may help somewhat, however it could end up ‘falling down’ if too loose.

Her last tip suggested putting headbands on babies for photos only, or for short periods of time, and to ensure it was taken off ‘after a while’.

The viral video has since been seen over 300,000 times, with nearly 200 comments mostly agreeing with Katie.

One parent said: ‘Yeah headbands are cute but I only put them on my daughter to take pictures then take them straight off’.

One person believed headbands caused ‘hair loss’ on the little tots.

Another parent said: ‘I always take mine off my baby when putting them in the car seat. Usually only wear them on outings or for pictures. They can be used safely’.

Meanwhile someone advised: ‘I’ve also stopped using bobbles in case she pulls it out and chokes on it if I leave the room for a few seconds. Sounds far-fetched but my anxiety!’

The new mother has been chronicling her parenthood journey alongside partner Rabeeh since her pregnancy in May last year.

The happy couple, who met almost a decade ago, regularly share parenting hacks on things like baby-led weaning and recipe tips.
