Inside Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia journey and daughter Willow’s act of kindness

The world watched as Will Smith walked on stage and slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony on 27 March 2022.

Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith was the butt of a joke, as host Chris mocked her by saying he "can't wait for G.I. Jane 2."

The joke was in reference to Jada's lack of hair, which Chris hinted was similar to Demi Moore's look in film G.I. Jane.

Jada has been very vocal after her battle with hair loss condition alopecia in the past, and she first addressed it in 2018.

Here, we take a look at the 50 year old's battle with the condition, and what she's said over the years…

Inside Jada Pinkett Smith's battle with alopecia

It was in 2018 that Jada first opened up on her battle with alopecia, during an episode of her Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk.

Jada said she'd felt "terrified" when she lost handfuls of hair in the shower and she ended up shaving her head in July 2021.

She shared that shaving her head had been "a mixture of a spiritual calling and also going."

She added: "At some point, your hairline is going to be back here…so we might as well just do it now."

The Baltimore-born beauty said during her episode that she was scared she was "going bald" when her hair internally started falling out.

She also opened up about how, in the past, people used to ask her if she had a weave due to her thick hair.

Jada continued: "I watch the higher power take things every day and, by golly, if the higher power wants to take your hair. 'That's it? God, do you want my hair?'

"When I looked at it from that perspective, it really did settle me."

Jada has said she was "open to ideas" when it came to her hair loss, and she'd fond a treatment to slow it.

The star continued at the time: "I'm getting my little steroid injections, and they seem to be helping, but not curing, but they seem to be helping, but I'm open to other ideas.

"I just want to say a thank you to everyone for all the outreach, from all the doctors and all the holistic practitioners, who have been reaching out to me for this head of mine, I appreciate it so much."

It was then a few years later that Jada shaved her head, with daughter Willow inspiring the new look.

"Willow made me do it because it was time to let go BUT … my 50's are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed," Jada shared.

Jada posted the footage to her 11.2million followers which featured the moment she had her hair cut, captioned: "Love and smile. You deserve nothing less."

Then in December 2021 she addressed her hair loss again in a candid video, which was captioned: "Mama's gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!"

In a video praised by fans she added: "Now at this point, I can only laugh. Trying to live with alopecia and just all of a sudden one day, look at this line right here.

"So it just showed up like that, so this is gonna be a little more difficult for me to hide, so I thought I'd just share it so you all are not asking any questions."

A number of celebrities have opened up about hair loss battles over the years.

Ex On The Beach star ZaraLena Jackson also shared a photo of herself after shaving her head and Made In Chelsea's Olivia ‘Liv’ Bentley has suffered from the condition for nearly a decade.
