Kate Middleton married Prince William in 2011 and for a number of years was the most famous female in the Royal Family. But when Meghan Markle came into the picture in 2017 as Prince Harry’s girlfriend, there were constant reports of rifts between the two. Meghan and Harry tied the knot in 2018 and began performing official royal engagements shortly after.
Kate and Meghan occasionally performed engagements as a duo, attending Wimbledon and working on other shared projects.
According to body language expert Judi James, Kate would use “public acts of unity” to demonstrate a close relationship with Meghan.
Judi spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the Duchess of Cambridge’s tactics for peacemaking in public.
She said: “When there were rumours swirling about a fall-out between Kate herself and her sister-in-law Meghan, it was Kate performing the public acts of unity and using her body language to describe a friendship between them.
“There were two displays at Wimbledon, one where Kate hosted Meghan alone and sat laughing and giggling with her as the cameras recorded every moment.
“The second time Kate sat Meghan between herself and Pippa to emphasise the impression that Meghan was very firmly one of the family group.
“It was Kate who led the signalling of friendship during the walk to church on Christmas Day when she left William’s side to move across to walk with and chat to Meghan.
“This was again in front of the cameras, to firmly signal that there was no rift between them,” the expert noted.
But what are Kate’s general body language traits to look confident in public?
Judi continued: “Kate is also developing a new body language trait of what looks like firmness as her profile in the Firm and her inner confidence are growing.
“The smile is still there but in between some of her smiles and laughter, she is also performing a subtle lip clamp that would signal an ability to think decisively and act with firmness.
“Kate looks more assertive as she gets older and it is a trait of quiet authority that she shares with the Queen.”
The Duchess has solidified herself as a peacemaking royal with other members of the Royal Family too.
Kate with her husband Prince William and his younger brother Prince Harry appeared like three best friends in Kate’s early days in the Royal Family.
The trio organised their own charity, Heads Together, to raise awareness for mental health.
However, the relationship between the brothers appeared to deteriorate over the years.
On the day of Prince Philip’s funeral on April 17, 2021, all eyes were on the brothers who were reunited for the first time in more than a year.
After the service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor, the royals walked back to Windsor Castle on foot.
Kate, William and Harry were seen chatting as they left St George’s Chapel – before Kate quietly dropped behind allowing the brothers to talk.
This action was praised by many royal commentators for managing to bring the two brothers together.
