By Maura Higgins’ own admission, she’s been very lucky to have been blessed with clear, beautiful skin for most of her life. But during the filming of Glow Up Ireland, the new Irish version of the hit TV competition for amateur makeup artists, the star admits to suffering from some particularly bad spots.
Updating her 3.3 million Instagram fans in a Q&A on Stories, Maura admits that the spots seemed to come out of nowhere.
“My skin basically has always been very good. I’m lucky and I know that. But when I was filming for Glow Up my skin broke out so much,” she explains.
“I’ll leave a picture to show how bad the spots were. On my ‘down day’ I went to a clinic in Dublin [Monica Tolan] and it was a godsend – my skin cleared up so, so quickly.”
Maura highlights her point by dropping in a makeup-free snap showing her usually-clear skin dotted with painful-looking bumps. The clusters mainly affect her chin and jawline area, which experts say is often the sign of a hormonal imbalance.
It might also have something to do with the fact Maura will likely have been wearing a mask more than usual during the filming of Glow Up.
“There are many ways in which wearing a mask could mean your skin will start to suffer, from friction causing irritation to bacteria transferring onto your face,” explains Lucy Xu, skin specialist and founder ofLondon Premier Laser and Skin Clinics . “Skin becomes congested, which could potentially promote acne around the cheeks and chin area.”
You’d never have guessed from Maura’s glamorous behind-the-scenes snaps that she was suffering from acne breakouts. The 30 year old, who recently went public with Strictly Come Dancing beau Giovanni Pernice, has been delighting fans with stunning hair looks that change from episode to episode.
Maura recently shared a look at a blunt bob cut, which she paired with a daring red lip. The style turned out to be a wig, but fans tried to persuade the former Love Islander to make the look permanent.
“So many people loved the bob! I actually didn’t cut my hair, I’m not brave enough for that,” Maura says later on in the Instagram Q&A.
“Carl is just very talented,” she adds, referring to her hairstylist of choice, Carl Bembridge.
If only we had Carl on hand to give us our own Glow Up each morning!
