Meghan Markle's Claim During Oprah Interview About No Royal Training Challenged by Duchess's Biographers

Many royal watchers are still talking about Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex‘s explosive interview with longtime talk show host Oprah Winfrey that aired back in March. Some have even been dissecting everything the pair claimed and questioning what’s true after the palace responded that the “recollections vary.”

It’s no surprise that the royal family would have a different account than the Sussexes but what is somewhat surprising is that the duke and duchess’ biographers don’t have the same story as Meghan about what royal training she received. Here’s what the Finding Freedom authors said about the former Suits star getting a “masterclass” from Queen Elizabeth II.

What Meghan told Oprah about not receiving royal training

During the Sussexes’ conversation with Oprah, Meghan explained that she felt ready to serve the crown alongside Harry. She revealed that she sent letters to the royal family saying: “I am dedicated to this. I’m here for you. Use me as you’d like.”

However, the prince’s wife claimed that she did not get any guidance from others in the family on what was expected of her or in what matter she was supposed to behave at certain times.

“There were certain things that you couldn’t do,” Meghan told Oprah. “But, you know, unlike what you see in the movies, there’s no class on how to… how to speak, how to cross your legs, how to be royal. There’s none of that training.”

The duchess added: “That might exist for other members of the family. That was not something that was offered to me.”

Meghan went on to say that she had to train herself behind the scenes learning things such as different hymns because she wanted to make Harry’s family “proud.”

Biographers wrote that duchess got ‘masterclass’ from Queen Elizabeth

Meghan’s claim about no training from members of the Firm is the opposite of what her biographers wrote in Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family.

The Express noted that in the book authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand pointed to Meghan’s solo engagement with Queen Elizabeth and said she got a “royal masterclass” from the monarch. The queen’s engagement with Meghan took place in 2018, less than a month after the duchess and Harry were married.

“[The queen] made sure Meghan knew what was going on and made her feel very much at home because it was her first trip,” Scobie and Durand claimed. The authors added: “Meghan, an avid learner studying all she could on royal protocol, was often seen carrying binders full of research so she didn’t put a foot wrong. That day was different though; she was getting a royal masterclass in training from the queen herself.”

Finding Freedom was released in August 2020 and marketed as an “honest portrait of the Sussexes’ lives.”
