Michael Schumacher children have shared heartfelt tributes to their father to mark the Ferrari great’s 54th birthday today.

The seven-time world champion, from Germany, had a skiing accident in December 2013 which left him with serious brain injuries and was later put into medically induced coma.

He was brought to the family’s Lake Geneva home in September 2014 where a team of medical staff now support his wife Corinna in looking after the 53-year-old.

In an Instagram post today, his son Mick, 23, posted a throwback photograph of him and his father together alongside a gushing caption.

The Mercedes F1 team and American alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn also replied to the post with a love heart emoji.

Meanwhile his sister Gina-Maria also shared a snap showing herself and her father together on Instagram.

She wrote: ‘Happy Birthday Dad. Throwback to our karting times! #keepfighting.’

The original post with just Mick and his father was captioned ‘Happy birthday to the best Dad ever… love you!’

Using the hashtag #KeepFighting, Gina wished her father a happy birthday and shared a snap of them together

The emotional social media posts come  after Mick shared a family picture of him smiling to the camera with his mother Corinna and Gina-Maria.

Many fans on the post were desperate to know about his father’s condition and whether he could talk, eat and walk independently.

Michael Schumacher is one of the most successful F1 drivers of all time, having copped seven titles in his career (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).

Added to this he has 71 fastest laps and 155 podiums to his name.

However he has not been seen in public since suffering severe head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013.

Mick, who is now an F1 driver himself, was skiing with him at the time. Michael’s state of health remains secret.

In 2019 the family released an update on his 50th birthday assuring his millions of fans they are doing ‘everything humanly possible’ to help him recover.

In 2020 it was suggested he was set to undergo stem cell surgery which was cancelled because of the Covid 19 pandemic.

In September Zurich-based neurology specialist Professor Erich Riederer told a documentary for French TV channel TMC he doubted the racing legend would ever fully recover.

He said: ‘I think he’s in a vegetative state, which means he’s awake but not responding.

‘He is breathing, his heart is beating, he can probably sit up and take baby steps with help, but no more.

Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm described the film as the ‘family’s gift to their beloved husband and father’.

‘The greatest challenge for the directors was certainly to find the balance between independent reporting and consideration for the family,’ said Vanessa Nocker who directed the film along with Hanns-Bruno Kammertons and Michael Wech.

‘Corinna Schumacher herself was our greatest support in this.

‘She herself wanted to make an authentic film, to show Michael as he is, with all his ups and downs, without any sugar-coating.

‘She was great and brave enough to let us do what we wanted, and so we respected and kept her boundaries. A very inspiring, warm woman who made a lasting impression on all of us.’
