Postman reveals what the inside of a post box REALLY looks like

  • Britons were left satisfied after finding out what the inside of a postbox looks like
  • A postal worker shared the interior of the iconic red letterbox to a Reddit thread

Post boxes are part of the very fabric of Great Britain – world-renowned pieces of street furniture that have been standing at handy locations since the 19th century.

And while millions can instantly recognise the bright red exterior of a beloved post box, far fewer could guess what their interiors looks like.

One postman has now revealed what’s on the inside of a traditional post box.

A postman has shared what the inside of a letterbox looks like (pictured) and while rusty and grey, many are ‘fascinated’ by the discovery

Sharing the picture to the CasualUK subreddit, the postman said: ‘You all seem fascinated so here’s inside one. Pls don’t jam big packets in as it blocks them.’

Contrasting the shiny red paint was a rusty grey inside with a wired letter bin.

The postman added: ‘Open box, bag under the chute then empty. Change tab to next day and voila.’

But the drab interior fascinated Reddit users who flocked to the comments to share their fond memories of letterboxes.

One user said: ‘remember walking past a postie that had one open as a kid and being like WOAAAAH’ to which the postman replied ‘I’ve had kids stop and watch before’.

He continued: ‘Then I’ll need their help to empty the letters and change the tabs over etc. If you have a job that kids think is cool, you’d have to be a monster not to wave/show them.

Meanwhile, others admitted guilt for the items they had once shoved in a postbox in their youth.

One user wrote: ‘When I was a kid I put some snow into a letter box and then immediately realised what I did and I haven’t stopped thinking about it for 16 years.’

The Reddit thread prompted some guilty Britons to admit what unauthorised items they had pushed through a letter box

Another user, with a similar experience, added: ‘I never ate my packed lunch sandwich but was too scared to tell my mam that I didn’t like it.

‘So I used to just drop it in the postbox, still in the sandwich bag, on my way home from school. I don’t know why I didn’t just throw it in the bin at school.’

Many Redditters were eager to find out what happens to unwanted post-box items, to which the postman replied: ‘Tell a manager and let them deal with it. Crisp packets etc are annoying and I just sweep them out onto the floor.’

He explained that dog waste, non-sealed Hospital samples and needles he is not supposed to touch.

It comes as Reddit users found out why UK postal workers always wear shorts.

The fashion choice has baffled many over the years, but posties claim they have a perfectly good reason for wearing them.
