Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence are celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary today. This is Anne’s second marriage, as the Princess Royal was previously married to Captain Mark Phillips between 1973 and 1992. The couple had two children, Peter and Zara Phillips, in 1977 and 1981 respectively.
However, the couple separated in 1989 and divorced in 1992.
Anne met Timothy in 1986 when he was serving as an equerry to Queen Elizabeth.
They married on December 12, 1992, in a Church of Scotland ceremony at Crathie Parish Church near Balmoral.
This is because the Church of Scotland permits second marriages for divorced people.
Judi James, a body language expert, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about Princess Anne’s little-known relationship with Timothy.
She said: “Perhaps the most fascinating thing about Timothy Laurence is that we know so little about him apart from the fact that he is married to Princess Anne.
“If it is this fact that defines the ‘invisible man’ of the Royal Family then it might also be a factor in what is now a very long-term and, we can only suppose, happy marriage.
“We are fed very few clues as to what makes this relationship work or how a famously ‘difficult’ but also dedicated and hard-working royal like Anne has found ‘the one’ after initially picking her Disney-style, dashing first husband Mark.
“Mark appeared to fit the criteria in terms of romantic hero good looks.
“But from his nickname, he seemed to lack the kind of strength of personality that a woman who grew up with Prince Philip as her alpha role model might be seeking.
“Even Anne and Timothy’s wedding day was a very low-key event with no real PDAs between the happy couple to allow for any speculation as to how they formed a complementary pairing,” Judi explained.
“Now, nearly 30 years later, Timothy is still the royal spouse that the public are least likely to be able to recognise or name.
“His body language in public often makes him look more like a discreet personal detective to the Princess Royal than her husband.”
She continued: “He will often stand upright and poker-faced behind her or beside her, but rarely displaying any body language signals that would give clues to their status as husband and wife.
“Even the pose with Anne and her ex-husband shows Anne displaying a wide, enthusiastic smile as she kisses Mark with obvious fondness while Timothy stands back, watching with an expression that can only be described as impassive.
“The best glimpse we have had in terms of showing how and why this marriage works so well came when Anne was recently photographed in her own lounge at home.
“She was sitting in what looked like comfortable chaos with Timothy beside her, looking like the ideal man to put your feet up with and relax and share some jokes with at the end of a gruelling royal day.
“And this might be the biggest clue to their success as a couple.
“By avoiding any telling body language ‘moments’ and by creating what might be a deliberate aura of discretion and ‘bland’, Anne and Timothy might have managed to live a life free from the soap opera of royal life.
“It might be how they create their own privacy, and it might also be a formula that some of the other royals should, in retrospect, have taken a lesson from.”
