No woman’s wardrobe can be complete without a sharp blazer.But they’re too often practical rather than pretty — even, well, rather dull. But this spring, there’s no garment more fresh, versatile and exciting than the blazer.
That’s thanks in part to Succession’s Shiv Roy. The billionaire queen of ‘stealth wealth’ is back in the final series of the hit TV show this week, and so too is her calling card: the power blazer with a feminine, wearable twist.
Forget the boardroom (although Shiv is certainly at home there): these are blazers for every occasion, in cool, pared-back shapes and a rainbow of spring colours.
They’ve even conquered the red carpet. Best Actress Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh was spotted in a chic caped design by Dior, while Jamie Lee Curtis dazzled in black velvet over a silk maxi skirt.
And from Rejina Pyo to Stella McCartney, to Chanel and Valentino, blazers were ubiquitous on the catwalks.

The secret to nailing the new look is adaptability. Don’t just think tailored officewear — blazers come in every shape and form, from sleek tuxedos for occasionwear to oversized designs that give you a fashion edge.
But which style is best for you? Here are the six key looks to choose from . . .
1. CUT THE COLLAR

If you’re looking for versatility without that workwear aesthetic, collarless is the way to go. Make yours look ultra sleek by wearing it over a simple top — or one with a statement neckline. Collarless blazers are also great to layer under a coat as they won’t add bulk.
Princess Diana wore them with panache in the 1990s, and now they’re back on the SS23 catwalks of Ferragamo and Jil Sander.

3. BOUCLE WITH A TWIST

The Chanel boucle tweed jacket is an icon. And this season there are dozens of High Street adaptations.
You’ll still find that boxy Chanel-esque silhouette, but there are less fussy styles, too. The Princess of Wales wore a longer ivory style from Zara in February, while the Duchess of Sussex chose a no-fuss black jacket for the Invictus Games. Mango has a fabulous pink version with gold buttons that add an expensive touch.

The red carpet news of 2023 so far? No one is wearing dresses any more. It’s all about tailoring.
Even the Princess of Wales has been swapping her conservative looks for suits, such as the bold red Alexander McQueen number she wore in January.
There’s no smarter tailoring than a tuxedo, with its defined lapels and structured style.

For spring, opt for colours rather than basic black: Jigsaw has a fabulous belted style in fuchsia or white.
5. PACK A PUNCH IN LEATHER

Take all the attitude of a biker jacket — and put it in a form you can wear to the office or a smart lunch. No wonder the leather blazer is having a moment.
It never goes out of fashion, but this season the fabric was seen everywhere on the SS23 catwalks, including Miu Miu and Bottega Veneta. Black is the colour of choice as it goes with pretty much anything.
But avoid too much fuss and detail — clean and sleek looks more expensive. Look for single-breasted, looser-fit styles for an effortless effect.
6. BAG A BOYFRIEND BLAZER

If you’re petite, look for relaxed cuts that aren’t too long in the body, and keep the rest of your look tailored to avoid drowning your frame. But if you’re looking to make a real statement, choose something with more structure and exaggerated shoulders.
And consider buying a size up for a real 1980s power look.
