William and Kate will go head-to-head at England v Wales Six Nations

It’s Cambridge v Cambridge! Rugby patrons Prince William and Kate Middleton will go head-to-head in the stands as Wales take on England in Six Nations tie

  • Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will cheer on England vs Wales on Saturday
  • Kate’s patron of England Rugby and Wills is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union
  • The couple are famously competitive and will want to beat the other’s team

There’s a big sporting match-up at Twickenham on Saturday.

Not England v Wales, but Kate Middleton v Prince William.

The famously competitive couple will be in the stands to cheer on their respective teams in their Six Nations tie.

William, 39, has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union since 2016, while sporty Kate, 40, was announced as patron of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union this month.

The famously competitive Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will go head-to-head for the first time as the respective patrons of Wales and England Rugby after Kate was given the role this month. She took over the roles from her brother-in-law Prince Harry who used to enjoy cheering on England before he was forced to give up the patronage as part of the Megxit agreement.

Kate, who grew up watching rugby with her family, is known as one of the sportiest members of the Royal Family and has gamely taken on her husband in everything from dragon boating to wind buggy racing at royal engagements.

‘[The Duke and Duchess] are famously competitive with each other and this will be no different – probably even more so now that they have an invested interest in the outcome of the game,’ a source said when Kate’s patronage was announced.

The Duchess of Cambridge has played tennis and hockey from a young age.

The Duchess took over as patron of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union from her brother-in-law the Duke of Sussex after he was stripped of his patronages in the wake of Megxit. Above, Kate took part in a training session at Twickenham after the announcement

Keeping up with Kate! The Duchess of Cambridge looked full of energy as she joined players for the Twickenham training session, hours after she was announced as Prince Harry’s replacement as patron of England Rugby. Rugby fan Harry loved his responsibilities. Pictured right, at an England Rugby training session in October 2013.

She is already royal patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and is a frequent visitor to the Wimbledon Championships.

Less well known is her love of rugby.  Her sister, Pippa, wrote in Vanity Fair magazine in 2014: ‘Rugby was a big thing for our family, we’d plan our weekends around the big matches.’

The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her rugby skills at an event at Twickenham earlier this month to mark her appointment.

Having a ball! Giggling Kate took part in a line-out with members of the England women’s rugby team at Twickenham earlier this month

Sporty Kate donned official England Rugby £50 pants and £50 zip-up top as she joined England players for a training session at Twickenham, hours after she was confirmed as the Duke of Sussex’s replacement.

Competitive Kate looked delighted to be stepping into her brother-in-law’s shoes and giggled, laughed and smiled her way through this morning’s drills, led by head coach Eddie Jones.

Wearing her hair swept back into a high ponytail, the mother-of-three was in her element as she tore across the pitch, joined in a scrum and even scored a try.
