Australia vs England preview

Rivalries don't get much bigger than England vs Australia, and occasions don't get much bigger than a World Cup semi-final.

This is undoubtedly England's toughest assignment yet.

The Lionesses are up against the co-hosts of the competition, who are 10th in FIFA's world rankings. Australia also boast home advantage in the 75,000-capacity Accor Stadium in Sydney.

England came from behind to beat Colombia in the previous round, while Australia edged past France via a bonkers penalty shootout.

Sarina Wiegman's side haven't always been convincing in this tournament, but their experience on the biggest stage has served them well in the crunch moments.

The Matildas, meanwhile, have never reached the last four of a football World Cup before – men or women. And it's the first time the host nation has advance past the quarter-finals of the Women's World Cup since 2003.

There will be a new name on the trophy this summer with all four teams left in the competition hoping to win the World Cup for the first time.

The match to finish 0-0 inside 90 minutes at 11/2 with Paddy Power – CLAIM HERE

There won't be too many surprises in store for either side when they clash on Wednesday.

More than a third of the Matildas squad play their club football in England, and the pair met just 127 days ago in an international friendly that Australia won 2-0 out in the United States.

The Aussies managed to keep a clean sheet that afternoon, and their entire campaign continues to be built on defensive solidarity having conceded in just one of their five World Cup matches.

In fact, Australia have kept 10 clean sheets in their last 13 matches in all competitions.

That's not great news for England who haven't been too prolific in front of goal. They've scored 10 goals in their last seven matches, and six of those came against China with the suspended Lauren James scoring twice and providing three assists.

Katrina Gorry to be booked at 4/1 with Paddy Power – CLAIM HERE

This one could be attritional.

Much of Australia's defensive joy has been built on the industrious midfield pairing of Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry.

The duo are strong, competitive and tenacious and will be tasked with disrupting England's methodical approach play.

Gorry, who plays for Swedish club Vittsjo GIK, was booked in extra time during the victory over France and now has six cautions in her last 21 games for Australia. She could add to that tally in front of a raucous 75,000 crowd in Sydney.
