Conor McGregor told he should RETIRE if he loses UFC comeback fight against Michael Chandler | The Sun

UFC star Conor McGregor could be forced into retirement if he loses his upcoming fight against Michael Chandler, according to Matt Brown.

The former two-weight world champion announced his return to the UFC earlier this month.

He is set to coach on the upcoming series of The Ultimate Fighter alongside Chandler before the pair go head-to-head in the octagon in September.

McGregor has been out of action since fracturing his tibia and fibula in the first round of his third fight with Dustin Poirier in July 2021.

But he has insisted that he is ready and waiting for his highly-anticipated return to the sport.

While the 34-year-old remains confident about the upcoming clash, MMA veteran Brown has warned him that he might have to RETIRE if he suffers a defeat.

When speaking on The Fighter vs The Writer podcast, he said: "I have a hard time seeing Conor fighting again if he comes back and he loses, especially a bad loss like that.

"He doesn’t have any reason to fight again.

"He’s coming back because he loves fighting and he wants to put on a show and he wants to be a champion again, I’m sure.

"I can’t imagine him having the motivation to fight again if he comes back and gets knocked out by Michael Chandler."

McGregor has undergone a painstaking rehab programme – along with a dramatic body transformation – to get himself fighting fit following his horrific leg injury.

And he will continue training when he arrives in Las Vegas to begin filming for The Ultimate Fighter, a reality television show which sees contenders live, train and fight together in a bid to win a UFC contract.

While McGregor and Chandler are both set to coach on the series, they will eventually come face to face in a headline fight to mark the finale.

Chandler, 36, has long campaigned to be the man to welcome McGregor back the UFC.

And he is excited for the challenge ahead.

When speaking about the fight following the official announcement, the American said: "Conor is the fight that I wanted.

"He has expressed interest in wanting to fight me and now here we are. The competition starts right now.

"We're going to be stuck together in the same city for a month, or month and a half, but the competition is 24/7 the entire time.

"I want to win this thing; I don't want to beat Conor later this year, I want to beat Conor badly on TUF. I don't even want him to win a fight.

"I cannot wait, this is something that I have wanted to do forever.
