Ex-Chelsea striker Morata could become 38th player to sign for both Real Madrid and Barcelona as Xavi targets transfer

ALVARO MORATA has been linked with a shock move to Barcelona in January as Xavi looks to bolster his attack.

The Blaugrana boss remains keen to strengthen his frontline having already landed Ferran Torres from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £55million.

And Marca state that he has now turned his attention to compatriot Morata, who is currently in the second year of his loan spell at Juventus from Atletico Madrid.

Should the 29-year-old link up with the Catalan outfit, he would be the 38th player to have signed for both Barca and Real Madrid.

The ex-Chelsea centre-forward came through the academy at Los Blancos, before enjoying two separate spells at Real.

Former Argentine striker Javier Saviola was the last player to have represented both clubs having joined Madrid in 2007 on a free transfer after running his contract down at the Nou Camp.

But Morata could be the first player to cross the divide in 15 years should Barca manage to agree a deal with Atletico and the Old Lady.

Morata, who has chipped in with seven goals and three assists in 23 games in all competitions this term, is claimed to be considering the proposal from Barcelona.

It has been stated that Xavi has already contacted Morata about the possibility of him joining in the upcoming transfer window.

Though the deal depends on whether Juve are prepared to turn the two-time Champions League winner's loan move into a permanent stay.

And Atletico could be unwilling to sell to a direct LaLiga title contender midway through the season.

Even if both parties allow Morata to join Barca, Xavi's side must offload players in order to bring him in due to their financial difficulties.

French winger Ousmane Dembele – in the final year of his contract – could be sold in a cut-price deal in January after turning down the chance to extend his stay.

Meanwhile Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho is another player that is likely to depart with Arsenal, Tottenham and Everton all said to be interested.
