Fan causes horror fall for cyclist just 300m from finish line as fuming race organisers forced to release statement | The Sun

THIS is the sickening moment a horror cycling crash was caused by a fan.

Fuming cycling race organisers were forced to release a statement after the spectator caused a terrifying fall.

As riders entered the end of the day's stage, one fan got a little over-eager.

Video footage shows her pointing her phone at the road, looking to capture the moment for herself.

But in doing so, she clumsily got too close to the action as it unfolded.

One desperately unfortunate cyclist competing in the Vuelta Extremadura was unable to avoid a collision, being caught by the spectator and sent flying.

Despite the clustered pack of competitors, no one else was sent sprawling in the incident.

And thankfully no one was seriously injured in the fall.

Event organisers responded by pleading with fans to be responsible when watching on the street circuit.

An official statement read: "We want to make a call to the responsibility of the public so that accidents like the one experienced at the end of today's stage are not repeated.

"It is important to keep your distance and not invade the road at the pace of the race."

Many fans were furious that the competitors' safety had been compromised.

One wrote: "How irresponsible."

A second similarly tweeted, alongside a facepalm emoji: "What irresponsibility of those people."

And a third responded: "I read that the victims' (injuries) are not serious, thank goodness.

"May the return end well, without more imprudence or scares!"

Another added: "Speedy recovery to the cyclists and the lady."

While thankfully not having the same impact, the incident evoked memories of the horrifying crash at the 2021 Tour de France.

On that occasion, an irresponsible fan trying to show off their sign turned their back on the peloton – colliding with rider Tony Martin and sparking a horrendous domino effect.
