England fans have shared their support on social media after the Lionesses suffered an agonising defeat against Spain in the World Cup final.

Sarina Wiegman’s side embarked on a arduous route to reach their first final, earning their place in their first-ever Women’s World Cup final after a hard-fought victory against hosts Australia.

Their opponents came into Sunday’s clash amid significant speculation about dissent behind the scenes, with some senior members of the team having previously called for divisive manager Jorge Vilda to be sacked.

Despite these issues, at the Stadium Australia Spain proved to be every bit the team that had pegged as one of the pre-tournament favourites to lift the trophy.

Though they would ultimately be unable to repeat their success from last year’s European Championships, fans hailed the Lionesses for their performance, and insisted even more success awaits Wiegman’s team.

But fans heaped praise on Sarina Wiegman’s side, calling them an inspiration for their performances in the tournament

One wrote: ‘I’m so proud of the Lionesses, their performance in this tournament was outstanding, they’ve inspired millions by making it to the FIFA Women’s World Cup final & they’ve changed the scope of women’s football in England for the better, they’re absolute heroes in my eyes.’

Another agreed: ‘What a tournament we’ve had. Hold your head high, ladies. You have done the country SO proud.

The excitement I’ve felt during this WC (and the euros) is something I haven’t felt watching an England side in a long time & that’s all down to you. The future is bright!’

Another fan added: Our Lionesses are brilliant. This is only the start. They should be incredibly proud of themselves.

One fan insisted that there was still cause for celebration despite England’s defeat: ‘Gutted for the Lionesses but proud of what they’ve achieved!

‘This world cup has been massive and it’s only the start, the team will come back fighting! Still celebrating despite the outcome!’

A further fan called the team an ‘inspiration’: Tell you what, I am so unbelievably proud of this England team and what they have achieved in the last few years – an inspiration to so many and made us all proud, this is women’s football.’

Another wrote of their anguish seeing the dejected players after the final whistle: ‘Seeing the Lionesses upset and crying is destroying me so disappointed for them. What an amazing legacy they’ve launched.’

Supporters took to social media to share their messages of support after England’s defeat

Though England had the first clear-cut chance to go in front when Lauren Hemp hit the bar just 15 minutes in, Spain dominated much of the action before the interval with Olga Carmona capitalising on their advantage to secure a well-earned lead.

A tactical change combined with the introductions of Lauren James and Chloe Kelly at the break made for a more competitive second half, but Golden Glove winner Mary Earps was forced to make several massive saves to keep her side in the game.

The Manchester United goalkeeper even denied Jennifer Hermoso from the penalty spot but England were ultimately unable to fashion an equaliser.
