Jamie Carragher backs 'broken' Harry Maguire over Onana rant and says Man Utd icon Keane 'would've told him where to go' | The Sun

JAMIE CARRAGHER says Harry Maguire was unable to defend himself from the “over the top” criticism from Andre Onana.

And the Liverpool legend was adamant that former Manchester United captain Roy Keane “would've told him where to go”.

The 30-year-old defender was under the spotlight again this week as he came off the bench to win his 59th England cap in the 3-1 win at Scotland.

Maguire’s lack of match action at club level led to many questioning his inclusion for the Three Lions and Scottish fans even cheered his arrival on the pitch at Hampden Park.

They then proceeded to jeer his every touch, and as the pressure mounted, things got even worse for Maguire when he scored an own goal midway through the second half.

England boss Gareth Southgate came out swinging in defence of Maguire as he slammed the “ridiculous treatment” and criticism he faced as “a joke” afterwards and that was followed up by fellow Three Lions ace James Maddison.

The centre-half’s mother then hit out at the treatment of her son and now Carragher has backed the United centre-half.

And he says that Maguire needs to be shown more respect by some of his team-mate’s after goalkeeper Onana publicly blasted the ace during a pre-season friendly against Borussia Dortmund.

Carragher believes United’s summer signing deliberately tried to endear himself to the club’s supporters by “disgracefully” yelling at the under-pressure ace.

Now he says that someone should have warned the Cameroon international against acting that way.

Carragher tweeted: “I’m well aware of Onana being demonstrative at all his clubs, and I like the fact he communicates.

“But to carry on like that in a pre season game when you’ve been at the club two mins, to the club captain, was way over the top.

“Any player worth their salt (Keane, Vidic, Rio, Stam…and me!) would have told him where to go & to get back in his goal.

“I felt he was trying far too hard to show the fans what he was about. The point was Maguire is that broken he didn’t say anything back. When he was well within his rights to do so.”
