January transfer window sees spending soar from £440m to £760m in a year with English clubs dictating the market

ENGLISH clubs dominated the recent January transfer window as spending headed back to pre-pandemic levels, according to Fifa.

Global spending topped £760MILLION – up from £440m just a year ago.

And English clubs forked out a whopping £258m of that, representing more than a THIRD of total transfer fees paid.

Liverpool splashed £33m on Porto’s Luis Diaz in a deal that could rise to £50m depending on performance.

Manchester City added Argentina striker Julian Alvarez from River Plate after triggering his £17m release clause.

And mega-rich Newcastle spent big on the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, who joined in a club-record £43m deal.

The £258m outlay by English clubs is almost three-and-a-half times more than every other club outside Europe COMBINED.

Non-European teams coughed up just £74m for new players in the January window.
