Man United 'urged to give Greenwood fee to domestic abuse survivors'

Manchester United ‘under pressure to give any transfer fee for Mason Greenwood to survivors of domestic abuse’

  • Manchester United confirmed on Monday that Mason Greenwood will leave
  • He has caught the interest of a number of clubs in Europe and the Middle East
  • They are facing pressure to donate any transfer fee to domestic abuse survivors

Manchester United are reportedly facing pressure to donate any potential transfer fee for Mason Greenwood to domestic abuse charities.

The Red Devils confirmed on Monday that they had come to a mutual agreement with the 21-year-old that his future was better served away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape, though the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges in February this year after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

He has attracted the interest of a number of clubs in Europe and the Middle East, and Mail Sport understands that he will either leave on loan or have his contracted settled – though he won’t play for the club again.

Though the club are yet to clarify whether they will see a transfer fee, The Telegraph have reported they are facing pressure should they look to cash in on the England forward.

Natalie Curtis, a domestic abuse survivor, speaking to The Telegraph said: ‘It seems wrong that anyone should profit from the Mason Greenwood situation that has been horrific for survivors.

‘If anything, if there is a transfer fee, it should be donated to a domestic abuse charity such as Women’s Aid.’

Gerry Sutcliffe, who served as sports minister under Gordon Brown between 2007 and 2010, added: ‘The club is likely to have a buy-back clause or add-ons if he can recover his form – so yes, any initial fee should go to domestic violence charities.’

Mail Sport reported that United football director John Murtough’s phone was ringing off the hook on Monday after United made their statement.

While Premier League and Championship clubs have made enquiries, there is a strong possibility that he will end up playing abroad.

Clubs such as Aris Salonika in Greece, Besiktas and Galatasaray have shown interest before now.

Roma have reportedly denied they are interested in signing the forward, as it has been claimed that Jose Mourinho does not want to be associated with the England international.

There have also been reports that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq are weighing up an offer for the striker.

Al-Ettifaq, who have won their first two league games this season, are said to be considering offering Greenwood a £10m-a-year contract.
