Erik ten Hag is desperate for Manchester United to be in the mix for the hottest summer transfer deals, writes PHIL THOMAS.

The Dutchman said: "For a long time it was a two-horse race but now it's a seven or eight-horse race. It's about strategy and about finance.

"Liverpool will fight back but other clubs are getting good players in, so the competition is really tough — which is good for the Premier League.

"So, I am planning. I always go for the highest and we go for the best, the best that we can get. "I'm here to manage the team, to get the best out of them and, of course, I have a job in bringing the right players in."

    Vidic hails Ten Hag's impact

Former United and Serbia defender Nemanja Vidic has lauded Erik ten Hag's performance as manager at Old Trafford.

Vidic told iNews: Erik ten Hag makes players better.“He’s a good coach — that’s very important.

"He’s working on the pitch all the time with them. He’s very stable as a person. He was already working for a big club and it seems like his approach is that nothing comes straight away, it’s hard work.

"He sees the longer picture. Even if you lose the match or win the match, where he wants to go.

"He gives me confidence as an ex-Manchester United player and fan that he knows what he’s doing.”

    Players have taken on responsibilities

Erik Ten Hag has insisted that his players have taken more responsibility in the dressing room

He told Sky Sports: “You need players who are taking responsibility and you need the right characters in the dressing room.

“So the moment they go onto the pitch they know what’s going on and take the right choices, the right decisions.

“You have to rely on your players in such moments and most times we can do it, and players like it – to play games like Leeds, like Barcelona, like [Manchester] City, Arsenal.

"But I think in all the Premier League games, players like to have a chance because when they get challenged, they get the best from them.”

Sutton backs Leeds for shock win

Chris Sutton believes that Leeds could pick up a shock win against Manchester United when they two sides face each other tomorrow.

He said on BBC Sport: “It’s very difficult to predict this game because there are so many unknowns – Wednesday night showed that anything could happen, and you could make a case for either side to win it whether Skubala is still in charge or not.

“I am going to go with Leeds, though. They have got some good players and they are going to have a day soon where they do more than just perform for patches of the 90 minutes.

“Their fans will make a difference too, because Elland Road will be absolutely bouncing.

“I guess we will probably see a fragile Leeds too at some point of the game, and I don’t trust their backline so I think Manchester United will score – but the home crowd can help their team through it.”
