Newcastle to step up £60m Dominik Szoboszlai transfer talks with James Maddison on verge of joining Tottenham | The Sun

NEWCASTLE will ramp up interest in £60million-rated RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai — as Tottenham close in on James Maddison.

Attacking midfielder Maddison was top of Toon’s wishlist but Spurs are willing to offer him up to £170,000 a week.

Tyneside boss Eddie Howe wants another elite signing alongside Sandro Tonali — who arrives this week from AC Milan for an initial £55m.

Szoboszlai, 22, is a cheaper and younger alternative.

The Hungarian was scouted last season as he bagged six goals and eight assists in the Bundesliga.

But a move is complicated by his £60m release clause expiring on Friday, meaning a deal could be harder to strike afterwards.

Leipzig will be under no pressure to sell the attacker if defender Josko Gvardiol joins Manchester City for £85m.

Newcastle are in talks with Southampton for right-back Tino Livramento, 20, with Tonali kicking off their summer splurge.

Icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic played with the Italian playmaker, 23, at Milan for the last three years.

The retired Swede said: “Is he ready for the Premier League? Yes. I showed him the mentality you need to win.”

Some Toon fans are so happy with the club's transfer business they want a statue erected of sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Ashworth previously worked at the FA and in charge of transfers at Brighton.

He was poached by Newcastle in February 2022 and signed talents like Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

All have been vital in firing the Toon into the Champions League.
