'OBE's given out like smarties' – England SLAMMED by Germany legend Hamann after Italy's World Cup humiliation

DIETMAR HAMANN blasted "OBE's are given out like smarties" in a dig at England boss Gareth Southgate.

The former Germany star fumed that the prestigious award is given out all too easily.

Gareth Southgate was previously awarded with an OBE for his services as Three Lions boss after the 2018 World Cup.

England reached the semi-finals in Russia four years ago before a heart-breaking Euro 2020 final loss on penalties to Italy.

Italy's shock loss to North Macedonia last night caused former Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester City man Hamann to launch a stunning attack on Twitter.

The ex-Germany international questioned whether England's loss to Italy in the Euros finally was really a "success," before ridiculing Southgate's OBE.

He said: "After seeing what happened to Italy last night I wonder whether last years runner up spot is still deemed a success for England.

"Golden opportunity missed but still OBE‘s given out like smarties."

Embarrassingly for Hamann, Southgate WASN'T officially recognised for his efforts leading the Three Lions to the final of the Euros.

His OBE actually came back in 2019 after he lead England to semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Southgate though had been in line for a knighthood had England beaten Italy in the Euro 2020 finals.

Eventually the game ended in defeat, and now just eight months later the reigning European Champions failed to qualify for a second consecutive World Cup.

Roberto Mancini's side crashed out of the World Cup play-offs after being embarrassed 1-0 at home by minnows North Macedonia.

Three Lions fans were left revelling in Italy's embarrassment, while Italian newspapers slammed the team for another World Cup failure.

Mancini referenced the Euro triumph in his post-match interview, but there are many calling for his head less than a year after the final.

Southgate meanwhile continues to quietly go about his business with England, and his young squad will head to Qatar full of confidence after their run to the final last year.

Mancini said after the defeat: "I’m more than disappointed, I’ve nothing to say.

"Something incredible happened tonight. We deserved to win the Euros, now we’ve been really unlucky…

"But that’s it, that’s the reality. I’m sorry for the players."
