Three days before the start of a new season, the Colorado Rapids revealed the home venue for Rapids 2 — University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
The new MLS Next Pro team will play nine games at the stadium, which has a 2,000-seat grandstand, in addition to standing room. Three other games will be held at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, two scheduled as doubleheaders with the big club and one as the MLS Next Pro Game of the Week in August.
“DU provides Rapids 2 with an ideal home venue. The facility is top quality and we have a long-standing relationship with the University of Denver soccer program and this partnership gives us a chance to showcase some of our up-and-coming talent in an area that is rich with Rapids fans,” Rapids 2 general manager Brian Crookham said in a team statement.
Rapids season ticket members get complimentary tickets on a first-come, first-serve basis but those are subject to a processing fee. Individual, general-admission tickets will cost $10, and can be purchased on the DU athletics website or at its box office.
MLS Next Pro is a new third-division league led by MLS. Teams will play 24 regular-season games (12 home/12 road) in addition to the playoffs. Interestingly, there will be no ties. If a game is tied after regulation, it will go to a penalty kick shootout.
Rapids 2 will play in the Frontier Division with North Texas SC (FC Dallas), Houston Dynamo II, Sporting KC II, MNUFC 2 (Minnesota United) and STL City (St. Louis City).
Rapids 2, led by head coach Erik Bushey, will open the season at 4 p.m. Sunday against Sporting KC II.
