NATHAN JONES is a strong favourite for the Southampton job.

That's according to bookmakers Sky Bet, who've installed the Luton Town manager at 2/5 to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary's.

However, there's several other high-profile contenders with Sean Dyche, Marcelo Gallardo and Mauricio Pochettino all in contention.

Hasenhuttl was relieved of his duties on Monday following Southampton's 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

The 55-year-old was appointed in December 2018, but departs with the club anchored in the Premier League relegation zone with 12 points from a possible 42.

Saints have three wins this season, but only one from the past nine matches.

The Austrian leaves with a 34% win percentage having won 59 of his 173 matches in charge.

Southampton said in a statement: "Hasenhuttl departs having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and playing squad.

"However, we now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change.

"Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all of his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his time as manager."

Hasenhuttl is the fifth Premier League manager to leave his position this season, following Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Steven Gerrard.

But who will replace him?

Sky Bet are confident that Luton Town's Nathan Jones is the frontrunner at odds-on 2/5.

The Athletic claim Southampton hold Jones in high regard and are 'considering' an approach for the Championship boss.

The 49-year-old is currently in his second spell in charge of Luton, who sit eighth in the table – two points behind the play-off positions.

Jones took Luton to the Championship play-offs with a sixth-placed finish last season, only to lose against Huddersfield Town in the semi-final.

Sean Dyche is next in the betting markets at 5/1, and is known to be eyeing a return to Premier League football following his departure from Burnley.

River Plate's Marcelo Gallardo is offered at 8/1, ahead of Bodo/Glimt's Kjetil Knutsen (12/1) and former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino (14/1).
