A footballer has been stabbed to death in Spain in what police believe is a random attack.

24-year-old Chipiona CF player Francisco J. Naval Perez was killed, with a 20-year-old man having been arrested.

As reported by The Sun, the married dad, known as Paco, died in hospital on Sunday after he was stabbed in the chest in Cadiz.

According to the Spanish Civil Guard there was no reason behind the attack and there were no known links between the two men. 

It is claimed that the attacker stabbed Perez without saying anything.

Following the incident, Paco was taken to the hospital in Sanlucar and Jerez de la Frontera.

However, given the seriousness of the injuries he suffered, he had to be transferred to the Puerta del Mar hospital in Cadiz. He died at around 2.30 am on Sunday. 

Chipiona CF released a statement saying: ‘Well, we don’t even have words to begin with, this seems like a nightmare, but unfortunately it’s real, our player Paco Naval Perez has left us, he died this morning.’ 

The statement added that Paco had been ‘fighting between life and death’ and that he ‘had his whole life ahead of him’. 

Real Madrid also paid tribute to Paco.

Their statement read: ‘Real Madrid CF deeply regrets the death of Paco Naval, a Chipiona CF player, and wishes to express its condolences and affection to all his family, his club, teammates and loved ones. RIP.’
