    TURKEY TEAM NEWS

Senol Gunes is going to have to do without Cengiz Umut Meras who has picked up a muscle injury but judging by some of the quotes in his press conference, the Turkish boss is prepared to slightly alter the personnel to his usual first XI regardless.

Gunes said: “We can make some changes in the team against Switzerland, especially in midfield, we have been disappointing both in defence and attack.

“I was so happy with their performance during the qualifiers for the Euro and the World Cup, but we have had problems in the midfield here.”

So with that being said and needing to win by a healthy score-line, Turkey’s head coach may decide to switch up the formation and provide Turkish skipper Burak Yilmaz with a partner instead of him playing solo up-top.

And the gaffer’s comments about midfield could possibly mean a start for Fenerbahce midfielder Irfan Kahveci or Lille’s Yusuf Yazici.

All will be revealed as soon as the starting line-ups are in.

    LIGHTS CAMERA ACTION

If the Swiss show the same passion today as what has been displayed in this video, then there is every chance that they will stay in the competition.

    This clip gives me goosebumps.

    SWITZERLAND SQUAD UPDATE

Despite the Swiss in need of a victory and an improvement on their goal difference which could be pivotal in their chances of progressing to the last 16, it is unlikely for Vladimir Petkovic to make much changes to the line-up from the last time out.

Which means we could see a back three of Fabian Schaer, Nico Elvedi and Borussia Dortmund’s Manuel Akanji.

Granit Xhaka should join Atlanta’s Remo Freuler as the spine of the team and Liverpool attacker Xerdan Shaqiri is most likely to start behind the two strikers.

Breel Embolo is a bright spark in the team and is their only goal scorer of the competition at the moment so it’s hard to see him being replaced up-top.

But with Benfica forward Haris Seferovic failing to make his mark on the tournament, Mario Gavranovic could be given a chance from the start instead.

    BAKS TO THE WALL

Going into the final group game, both teams still have an outside chance of qualifying for the last 16 but not even a positive result for either side this evening guarantees their spot.

However, one thing for sure is how well prepped the playing surface looks. It's quite simply immaculate.

Oh what I would do to see some wonderful goals in Baku.

    THIRD WHEELING

The group stages are coming to a close which means that teams will have their final chance to secure an automatic last 16 qualification spot by finishing in the top two.

However, four extra teams can also progress based on finishing 3rd in their group and how many points they have accumulated whilst doing so.

Example – If Switzerland were to end Group A in 3rd place and had managed to gain more points than at least three of the other 3rd placed teams in the other groups, the Swiss will advance to the knock-outs.

However, it may not go as smooth as that though because there can always be stipulations such as two 3rd placed teams being tied on points once the group stages have been concluded.

If that was the case, the first port of call would be who has the superior goal difference and if that is equal then up next is the highest number of goals scored.

But in the unlikely event of both of the previous being the same, who has won the most games would be the following statistic to look at and should the sides still not be separated by that, then it will be decided on the disciplinary record.

By this point, it would be unheard of not to have a nominee to go through but if all else fails, the only way to declare the final spot to a nation is by comparing their overall European Qualifiers rankings.

    HEAD-TO-HEAD

In the 15 games played, Turkey have won eight of them and the Swiss have been triumphant four times which means the other three have been stalemates.

On paper, the Crescent-Stars are strong favourites but in this kind of a competition, you just never know.

Especially with the way the group has turned out, we might see a deflated Turkey side on display this evening.

    HISTORY

Dating back to 1952, there has been 15 encounters between the Swiss and the Turkish outfit, but this will be their first battle in over 13 years.

Not even an international friendly has been played in that time but Turkey currently have the upper hand because it was them who were victorious in 2008.

It was an embarrassing night for the Swiss because they co-hosted the Euros that year and were the first team to exit the competition.

However, Switzerland started off the game brightly and if it wasn’t for the strong hands of Volkan Demirel, they would have taken the lead early on from a stinger by Hakan Yakin but the Turkish goalkeeper palmed it to safety.

Demirel continued to have his work cut out because the Turkish number one was forced into a fingertip save from a Tranquillo Barnetta free-kick shortly after.

But with the aid of adverse weather conditions, Switzerland finally got their goal when Eren Derdiyok fizzed a ball into the box which was slowed down because of the torrential rain allowing Hakan Yakin to tap it in from close range.

The attacker had the chance to double his tally and double his countries lead before the interval but he couldn’t keep his composure this time round.

And Yakin’s spurred opportunity was punished when a rejuvenated Semih Senturk nodded home Nihat’s cross 12 minutes into the second half putting Turkey on level terms.

There was a continuous downpour during the entirety of the match which made it difficult for both sides to put any kind of possession together.

So for a while it seemed as if the match was going to fizzle out to a stalemate.

But Turkish attacker Arda Turan took it upon himself in injury time to cut inside from the wing and let fly which ultimately resulted in the ball beating Diego Benaglio via a wicked deflection making it 2-1 to Turkey.

    PREDICTIONS

And on that note, who is everyone’s money on to join Italy in the last 16?

    I personally think that…

Actually no, let me be professional and keep my predictions to myself.

    GROUP A

So, going into the final match-day, bar an absolute miracle, the standings for Group A has all but been confirmed.

Having failed to record any sort of positive result in their two fixtures, means that Turkey can only progress to the next stage of the competition through the best 3rd placed team’s route.

As for the Swiss, they need to beat the Turkish outfit, hope that Italy can beat Wales and pray that the results are convincing enough to overturn the goal difference deficit.

It sounds like a lot but this is football, stranger things have happened.

    GOOD AFTERNOON

Hallo or Merhaba to all the football fanatics tuned in this afternoon.

The Groups in the European Championship are really starting to take shape as we enter match-day 3 of the competition.

If you hadn’t already realised after the first three words of the introduction, then this blog features Switzerland who will be taking on Turkey at the Baku Olympic Stadium.

Three words that the Swiss might not be able to associate themselves with after this evening is knock-out rounds because the loss against Italy means that they are currently sitting in 3rd place, two points behind Wales.

And with only one game left to play, not to mention a significantly poor goal difference to the teams above them, it would take an absolute miracle for them to progress to the last 16.

Note that I said miracle but this is football so it’s certainly not impossible.

Switzerland’s opponents this evening have already have pretty much had their fate decided after failing to land a single point on the board in their two opening group games.

So if the Swiss national side play their cards right and bag a hat-full of goals against a potentially depleted Turkey side, then there is every chance that they can go through.

But only if the other results fall in their favour. There would be absolute scenes in the Swiss camp!

It's virtually impossible for anybody to tell me that they aren’t interested in seeing how this all unfolds so make sure to keep refreshing this page as I update it with all the latest gossip, quotes and team news all before kick-off at 17:00 UK time.
