Ben Shephard told Kate Garraway and Good Morning Britain guest Christopher Biggins the one thing he is “struggling” with when it comes to recovering from his recent operation is mobility. The presenter revealed he had undergone surgery after rupturing his ACL, tearing his meniscus and fracturing his leg during a football match.
Biggins was discussing his own operation – a knee replacement due to arthritis – and said: “I was knocked out.”
“You’ve got a goal to be back on stage in Panto – they gave you what? Six months for the full recovery?” Kate said. “Are you going to make it?”
“I think so. I’m getting better all the time,” Biggins replied. “For instance, we were talking about theatres, and it’s wonderful they’re opening.
“And I been out to three shows in the last week and I find it easier to sit down and get up from a sitting position.
“Which you know, is a problem when you have a knee problem -”
Ben interrupted: “Getting that flexibility and bend back in the knee – that’s what I’m struggling with.”
Ben recently returned to GMB following his operation.
Nearly two weeks after he left the hospital, Ben told his fans on social media: “Hi all! So just wanted to give you a quick update on how my recovery, post ACL surgery is going.
“If you didn’t know I essentially buggered up my right knee playing football- (that’s the technical term) a few months ago.
“I’m about 11/12 days post-op now. I can’t thank you all enough for the messages you’ve sent, asking how I am and wishing me well.
“I’m sorry I can’t respond to them all, but I do try and read as many as possible.
“There’s lots of you going through similar, or waiting for ops, and some great advice from those who’ve been through ACL surgery too.

“Thank you for every single one,” he continued.
Ben joined Susanna Reid on Monday 19 July before she went on holiday – he was seen with his leg supported by a chair under the desk.
As for how Ben injured his leg, he was playing football at the time.
“Interestingly, I didn’t realise I had done it quite so badly,” Ben said.
“I carried on playing for 25 minutes before I thought, ‘It feels a little bit unstable, perhaps I should stop.’
“It turns out I had severed all the nerves which is why I couldn’t feel any pain, and just carried on playing.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
