Brassic star says show ‘shafted’ him with Christmas special costume

It’s set to be a star-studded Christmas for the Brassic gang, with the Sky comedy welcoming The Crown’s Imelda Staunton and comedian Greg Davies to the cast for its festive special.

Although for Tom Hanson, who plays Leslie ‘Cardi’ Titt on the show, filming with Imelda felt more like a family reunion. “I’ve known Imelda for quite a while because she’s friends with my parents,” says Tom, who is the son of Downton Abbey ’s Samantha Bond and actor Alexander Hanson.

A Very Brassic Christmas follows Joseph Gilgun’s Vinnie as he does Dr Chris (Dominic West) a favour by looking after his Aunt Edie (Imelda), who’s on her own for Christmas.

However, after a robbery at Vinnie’s son Tyler’s school ruins the nativity, Vinnie has to recruit Cardi to keep an eye on Edie for him.

“Imelda famously plays Dominic’s mother in The Crown and now his aunt in Brassic so The Crown-Brassic cinematic universes cross over,” Tom laughs.

Meanwhile, JJ’s Parth Thakerar admits that he was “shafted” for the Christmas special in the wardrobe department – with the actor spending most of the episode in a massive bauble costume.

Filming scenes in which the Brassic crew stage a Winter Wonderland heist to replace Tyler’s nativity decorations, Parth was asked to be a bauble after co-star Bronagh Gallagher (Carol) turned the costume down. “I couldn’t fit through doors, I couldn’t run anywhere even though it was a heist,” he smiles.

“I couldn’t even fit in the car! In classic Brassic-style, it was like, ‘We’ll make it work,’ and we did.”

Created by and starring Joe Gilgun, Brassic follows a group of petty criminals – led by Vinnie (Joe) – living in the fictional northern town Hawley as they try to make ends meet.

Former Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan plays Erin, Vinnie's friend and single mum, while the likes of The Split's Damien Molony, Plebs' Ryan Sampson and The Crown's Dominic West take on the roles in the wider cast.

Earlier this year, Michelle posted behind-the-scenes snaps from the Sky drama's fifth series, featuring Love Island’s Lana Jenkins – who worked as a celebrity make-up artist before appearing on the reality show.

A Very Brassic Christmas airs Thursday 21st December at 10pm on Sky Max
