Call The Midwife fans terrified show will be axed by BBC as 'beginning of the end' storyline kicks off | The Sun

CALL The Midwife fans have been left terrified the show will be axed as a 'beginning of the end' storyline kicks off.

The latest episode of the BBC One period drama aired on Sunday evening.

It saw the health board pay an unexpected visit to Nonnatus House.

As equipment started to break down and Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi) and Reggie Jackson (Daniel Laurie) attempted to fix it, a man arrived at the door.

He greeted the two by saying: "My name is Threapwood. I'm chairman of the Board of Health. Are you a medical equipment specialist?"

Amused by his assumption, Fred replied: "No. Jack-of-all-trades. I'll turn my hand to most things if it helps the sisters out. Yeah. Same down the maternity home."

But Threapwood has left less than impressed during his visit and delivered some worrying news.

The chairman then asked for Sister Julienne to meet him when she had returned.

Later on as the pair met, he told her: "Take a seat. Thank you for sparing me the time. I called you in today because I thought it was time to refresh our understanding of the Order's position."

She replied: "Our position in Poplar," until he corrected her, saying: "We encourage the name Tower Hamlets since the inception of the GLC."

But as the continued to speak it soon became clear the meeting would wield bad news.

"Nonnatus House is financially inefficient and too dependent on the resources of the Turner practice which we also have in our sights," he said.

"You both use dangerous unskilled labour for maintenance. Finally, and I shudder to think how things have come to such a pass in the modern age, you are currently only operational because of private charity."

He added: "At a time to be decided by the Board of Health, Nonnatus House will lose its agency status and its autonomy."

The news has left fans fearing that Nonnatus House will cease to exist – and the show too.

Taking to social media, one said: "A life without Nonatus house is dreadful!!! I must protest @CallTheMidwife1 must never end!!!!"

"Ooh I'm not liking this board of health man. Feels like the beginning of the end," said a second.

A third posted: "I'm not sure how I will cope if #CallTheMidwife ever ends."
