Casualty review with spoilers: Ffion pushes Jan away after breast cancer shock

It was the turn of Jan (Di Botcher)’s wife Ffion (Stirling Gallacher) to be hit by a double Casualty Curse this week. The first Curse specifies that relatives and friends of ED staff members are more than usually prone to suffering accidents or illness. The second Curse is that anyone with a minor problem is very likely to be discovered to have a major problem as well.

So Ffion, having impaled herself on a nail in a low-speed pursuit of some suspects, was found to also have breast cancer. Ffion and Jan have been living apart for weeks, after they fell out over Jan supplying drugs to her son Ross in prison. Jan has been living with Iain (Michael Stevenson) and dearly hoping that she and Ffion might get back together again.

When some flowers arrived from her, Jan was optimistic that Ffion felt the same way too – until she realised they were intended for the whole department as a gesture of sympathy after the deaths of Lev and Fenisha.

But surely now, in the face of Ffion’s devastating diagnosis, was the ideal time for Jan to move back in with her wife? ‘It’s you and me, love. Got to be you and me,’ Jan said. She would look after Ffion and they’d face whatever the future held together. Ffion, however, wasn’t having any of this. ‘I love you,’ she told Jan, ‘But I’m in no way ready to need you.’ Harsh words, and Jan was soon sadly finishing her shift because there was nothing to go ‘home’ (Iain’s home) for.

There was nothing much at home for Ethan (George Rainsford), either. He’d given the last of Bodhi’s things to Fenisha’s parents and turned down their offer of him spending the weekends with his son. The target of his grief-induced anger this week was Matthew (Osi Okerafor), the man who was with Fenisha when she was fatally injured. A part of Ethan couldn’t help wondering whether Fenisha had been about to run away with Matthew, and he couldn’t bear Matthew’s attempts at sympathy or hearing his opinion about what might be best for Bodhi. ‘You already took Fenisha, so would you like Bodhi as well?’ he said.

They even came to blows at one point, until Dylan (William Beck) intervened and gloriously accused them of ‘squabbling over who’s got the longest stethoscope.’

Rash (Neet Mohan) tried to help Ethan, as did Robyn (Amanda Henderson) who gently reminded him that she’s been in the same position as him after Glen died. She told him now wasn’t the time to be making huge decisions about Bodhi. Ethan isn’t ready to listen to any sensible help, though, but at least he was prepared to listen when Matthew explained that he’d wanted Fenisha to run away with him, but she told him it was Ethan she loved.

And the accident of the week was caused by a backfiring gender reveal cannon. Luckily no lasting injuries were sustained and the ED staff were able to help an anxious and confused father-to-be to embrace the future and be a proper support to his partner and unborn son.

If only pointing Ethan’s way forward was that easy.
