George (played by Tony Maudsley) has been enjoying his romance with Eileen (Sue Cleaver) of late on Coronation Street after months of the pair struggling to admit their feelings for one another. With Eileen having had so much trouble in relationships in the past, she seemed to think the undertaker could finally be the one for her. However, during Friday’s double-bill of the ITV soap, there was a clue George could be set to begin an affair with another cobbles resident and he could betray his current partner in the worst way possible.
In recent weeks, viewers haven’t seen too much of George and Eileen as they’ve both been background characters in other storylines.
However, during the latest episodes of the weeknight serial drama, they were seen enjoying a drink together in the Rovers Return.
Listening in to the conversation was Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove) who was also having a drink and has been without a lover since her dalliance with Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) earlier this year.
At first, the undertaker was recalling a story about a funeral he had been a part of and was telling his partner: “The thing was, as this woman was leaning over the grave…”
“What was she doing on her hands and knees?” Eileen asked her partner, confused where he was going with the story he was telling.
“Grief, I’ve seen it,” Bernie interjected, adding: “A mate of mine collapsed when they were burying her old man.
“But in her case, it was probably relief,” she continued, with Eileen and George both laughing at her story before the undertaker carried on with his story.
“As she’s leaning over, this candle is burning along the side of the grave,” he continued, with Bernie stating it sounded all a bit “weird” for her liking.
“No, it’s dead popular now,” George explained, before adding: “As she’s leaning over the grave to say her last few words, her hair brushes the candle.
“Fortunately, some fella had the presence of mind to squirt over the head with this bottle of orange squash,” he concluded.
Never a dull moment with you

Bernie jumped in as she said: “It was lucky there was no gin in it or she would have gone up like a Roman candle,” with George and Eileen laughing once more.
The troublemaker offered the undertaker a compliment as she said: “I’ve got to give it to you George, there’s never a dull moment with you around.”
“You have no idea,” Eileen remarked before Bernie replied: “I bet, you saucy mare. Alright, I’ll leave you two love birds be.”
As Bernie walked off with a drink in hand, Eileen was left open-mouthed as it seemed Gemma Winter’s (Dolly-Rose Campbell) mum was making a move on her man.
This might have been a passing comment made by the troublemaker but will she and George really embark on an affair?
George has been caught in love triangles before as he had an admirer in Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) when he first joined the show.
However, his heart has always been with Eileen, despite them taking over a year to get together and many incidences of miscommunication.
Though, having now been her partner officially for a few months, the undertaker could decide he is ready to test the waters.
As Bernie was clearly flirting with him, he could decide he wants to spend some more time with her to see if they have a spark.
When he realises he might like Gemma’s mother a lot more than he first thought, he could betray Eileen by sleeping with Bernie behind her back.
Not willing to let Eileen go, however, he could decide to have an affair with Bernie so he could keep both women in his life.
There will be serious repercussions for him if Eileen were to find out as she would immediately end her relationship with the undertaker.
With the fun and the secrecy taken out of it, Bernie could also drop her lover as she no longer feels they have a spark.
By wanting to keep both of the women, George could lose both of them through his greed and betrayal.
Will either of the women give him another chance as he tries to wriggle his way out of becoming a single man once more?
Speaking of his character and his relationship with Eileen, the actor who plays George, Tony, insisted he wants the undertaker to be happy in his current romance.
“It has taken a while, he has been eased into the show very gradually over the past 12 months,” the soap star began.
“He was flagged as a new love interest for Eileen but if he had got with her too quickly people wouldn’t have liked it, it would have jarred as the viewers are so protective over Eileen.
“Sue has been on the show 21 years and but with all the problems Eileen has had with men, I think the viewers are on George’s side.
“He makes her smile, he is a sensitive softy. They want Eileen to be happy and in George, she might finally have found that, if she would only let her guard down!”
Will they be angry with him if they discover he is going to betray Eileen with Bernie?
Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
