Coronation Street’s brand new set revealed in first pics with dessert shop and pawnbrokers

The world of the characters in ITV soap Coronation Street is about to get much bigger as the set is due to expand.

The hit ITV soap, which has had its schedule shaken up by the World Cup, is about to add a pawnbrokers, Chinese takeaway, dessert shop, pound shop and a charity shop to its plethora of iconic filming locations.

The shops, which will follow a 1960s style and have maisonettes above them, have been mentioned by characters on the soap but have never made an appearance on screen – until now.

The Corrie cast shared their excitement about the expansion after long-time star Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Metcalfe, an iconic character who first appeared on screen in 1986, cut the red ribbon to open the set.

Daniel Brocklebank, who plays vicar Billy Mayhew, spoke of his excitement with PA, saying, “It’s fantastic. It gives me the opportunity to play more stuff.”

He added that the set was “brilliantly depressing,” and speculated that his character Billy would be spending an awful lot of time in the show’s new charity shop.

The set has already been used for some scenes during filming – but it wasn’t fully completed until 1 December, meaning none of the cast and crew had seen the entire thing.

Elle Mulvaney, who plays Amy Barlow and recently enjoyed a European cruise with her mum, is one of the youngest members of the Corrie cast at just 20 years old and shared how important she feels the new set will be for the younger cast, adding: “There’s a lot of fun to be had.”

The new set is already thought to have been incorporated into an upcoming storyline, which will reportedly see Evelyn Plummer, played by Maureen Lipman, and Roy Cropper, played by David Neilson for more than twenty five years, head to the charity shop to become volunteers.

It’s thought that fans will get their first glimpse of the set in action in early January.

The soap has run for 62 years and, in that time, a few more additions have been made.

In 2018, the soap added Victoria Street and a Weatherfield Police Station.

The team behind the soap revealed that their move to Media City in Salford, which houses some of the country’s favourite shows, prompted the decision to expand the set as it increased the amount of space that they had available to them.

Rosie Mullins-Hoyle, one of the show’s designers who has worked on more than 1000 episodes, shared that they started designing the new precinct in February 2021.
