Spider Nugent (Martin Hancock) said another goodbye to Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) and Coronation Street in Wednesday’s (July 19) edition of the ITV soap.
The beloved character, who works as an undercover police officer, was told recently that he needs to leave Weatherfield for protection purposes. This left Spider wondering what to do about Toyah and their future together.
Initially, it looked as though Spider and Toyah were going to build a life on the cobbles after getting engaged. However, at the start of the week, Spider’s secret job put Toyah in danger when she was kidnapped by a woman called Maggie, who knew Spider from a mission that he was previously part of.
Maggie wanted Spider to feel how she felt when her husband was taken from her, so she kidnapped Toyah and held her hostage in the back of a van.
Fortunately, after the gun-showdown, Spider and Toyah were both fine, but the life-threatening ordeal made Toyah wonder if Spider should give up his job and put their relationship first instead.

Sadly, Spider wanted to follow his heart and that meant prioritising his job and because Toyah didn’t want to be second best, she ended their relationship.
In tonight’s episode, a devastated Spider packed up his things and said his goodbyes. He told Toyah that Leanne (Jane Danson) is worried about her and the two shared an emotional moment. It was clear that Spider was wondering if he had made the right choice, but still didn’t change his mind when Toyah said that things could be different.
Before he left, Spider gave Toyah a spider charm, hoping that would be enough to ensure she never forgets him.
Oh Spider, no one could forget you.
Dispearing into the tram station, Spider has departed the cobbles once more, but could we see him again in the future?
‘I would like to think he’s leaving with unfinished business. From chatting with people I think perhaps maybe not immediately, but I think there is some unfinished business’, Martin Hancock told us.
‘I’ve enjoyed it immensely coming back, it’s been great. When I was younger I was probably a bit too enamoured of the party scene [laughs]. It’s nice to come back as an older and wiser person and really enjoy it for what it is which is a great show with great people. I’ve really enjoyed it.’
Pondering over Toyah and Spider calling time on their relationship again, Martin said: ‘Life’s gone wrong between them! It’s just bad luck and circumstance, isn’t it? What’s been happening previously in Spider’s life, what’s been happening previously in Toyah’s life, have conspired to do them down at the end.
‘It’s sad. They’re both very committed people, but for now it’s just not workable.’
When he returned last year, Spider was involved in bringing down Griff (Michael Condron) and his extremism gang, a storyline that Martin was proud to be part of.
‘The rise of extremism is frightening and it’s so invidious, so subtle sometimes the way it works, the way it gets into young people’s minds’, he said.
‘It’s horrible, it’s a perversion and it destroys society if we don’t address it. So yes, I’m immensely proud that I was involved with that storyline. The people in that storyline were fabulous.’
While Spider heads off to attend his next job and help make the world a better place, could there ever be a possibility of the character living a quieter life on the cobbles? Martin seems to think so.
‘The thing with Spider is he’s such a hot-head!’, he laughed.
‘He loves a good old cause and he does want to change the world. I think this time round it’s possibly a bit of a wake-up call for Spider. I think he realises that actually there’s something to sticking around and staying in one place.
‘The great irony is his older self realises that he does want to stay in Weatherfield but unfortunately his younger self’s actions have dragged him away’, he added.
‘Maybe he’ll open an upcycling shop on the cobbles, something like that, where he refurbs and recycles things. Something along those lines…’
