Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) could be about to get his much-anticipated comeuppance in Coronation Street as it’s becoming increasingly harder for the character to keep getting away with being a multiple murderer.
’The walls are starting to close in on him,’ Todd Boyce confirmed to us. ‘Just when he feels he is getting where he wants to be it is all unravelling behind the scenes.’
Todd told us that he thought the Corrie writers had been very clever in building the story towards a situation where all of Stephen’s past misdeeds are coming back to haunt him. By ‘misdeeds,’ of course, we’re referring to the killings of Leo and Teddy Thompkins (Joe Frost and Grant Burgin) and the more recent killing of Stephen’s business rival, Rufus Donahue (Steven Meo).
It’s the killing of Rufus – by drowning him in a swimming pool – that could prove to be Stephen’s undoing. ‘All these little things are starting to add up,’ Todd said. ‘For now he still feels that he can talk his way out of all these situations but how is he going to explain the equity release letter, what is his mental health like now as he struggles with the inquiry into Rufus’ death?’

The letter from the equity release company could certainly alert Audrey (Sue Nicholls) to the fact that her son Stephen has been plotting to get his hands on her money. Audrey could prove to be a thorn in Stephen’s side, and there are three other women who Todd thinks could bring Stephen’s reign of terror to an end.
‘There are all these women in particular, who he hasn’t necessarily harmed personally, but he has by association,’ Todd pointed out. ‘Interesting that these are the people who are realising things. Sarah (Tina O’Brien) finds out about the equity release and she has always trusted him – but for how long will she now? And Carla (Alison King) is starting to twig on to the whole LSD link with Rufus and her “psychoses.”’
When Stephen drowned Rufus he spiked his drink with LSD, and prior to that he’d been spiking Carla with LSD obtained from Rufus in a bid to make her think she was having a psychotic episode. Since Rufus’s memorial and the theory voiced by his widow Lou that his death was suspicious, Peter (Chris Gascoyne) and Carla have been keeping a watchful eye on the businessman – could this be how he slips up?
If Sarah and Carla don’t work out what Stephen has been up to, there is one other character who might and that’s Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews). While Stephen is overjoyed to finally be in a relationship with the landlady, Todd cautioned that she could be the one who will eventually see right through him.
‘She is the apple of his eye, he is insane about her and he can’t believe they have finally got together, this has been a dream of his since they first met,’ he said. ‘She’s funny, she’s sexy, he just wants her on his arm. He just thinks she’s the bee’s knees. She caught his eye way back and that was it. She’s a character. She’s fiery and she stands her ground.
‘The thing is his love for intelligent and sassy women could be his downfall. Gabrielle got the measure of him and what is to say Jenny isn’t going to do that too?’
