What is Malcolm and Marie about and is it based on a true story?

MALCOLM and Marie is a black-and-white film starring John David Washington and Zendaya.

The film was the first Hollywood feature to be written, financed, and produced during the coronavirus pandemic, with secret filming taking place in the summer of 2020.

What is Malcolm and Marie about?

The film tells the story of a director and his girlfriend whose relationship is tested on the night of his latest film's premiere.

It explores what it's like to be in a relationship and highlights both the highs and lows of being in love.

Washington, 36, stars as film director Malcolm Elliott and Zendaya, 24, plays his girlfriend Marie Jones.

The couple return home from his film premiere and the strength of their relationship is put to the test in a near-two-hour argument as they discuss the film, the industry, their lives, and society.

The relationship drama was written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.

It was shot at Feldman Architecture’s Caterpillar House in Carmel, California.

Zendaya said the film was shot in black and white as a tribute to the Hollywood era.

Is it based on a true story?

Levinson said the plot of the film was inspired by a real-life event when he forgot to thank his wife at a premiere.

The idea for Malcolm and Marie came about after Euphoria shut down production amid the coronavirus outbreak in 2020.

Levinson spoke to his Emmy-winning star Zendaya about the possibility of making a film during the pandemic.

"We knew there were certain obstacles we would have to overcome from a pure narrative perspective," Levinson told Deadline.

"It would be two actors, one house and the idea [came from] my own life.

"It may be true that I forgot to thank my wife once at a premiere – which ended up being the jumping-off point for this relationship piece that continues to unravel from there."

The crew included members of the Euphoria team, including cinematographer Marcell Rév and production designer Michael Grasley.

Why is Malcolm and Marie rated R?

Malcolm and Marie is an R-rated film, which means the content may be unsuitable for children under the age of 17.

The 106-minute film is rated R for pervasive language and sexual content.

The Motion Picture Association of America established guidelines for film content which resulted in the creation of the Production Code in 1930.

How can I watch Malcolm and Marie on Netflix?

The film was released on Netflix on February 5, 2021.

Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film for $30 million in September, 2020, outbidding HBO, A24 and Searchlight Pictures.

The film was released in a few theaters across the United States on January 29, 2021 before it was released on Netflix.

But the film "made hardly any money" during its run in movie theaters, according to Deadline.
