Death in Paradise boss speaks out on future of spin-off

Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise cast united in crossover

Beyond Paradise came to a close last month and saw Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall) reuniting with his former colleagues in Saint Marie. Fans were thrilled about the Death in Paradise cross-over and questioned whether the detective would return to the Caribbean for good. However, at the end of the episode, Humphrey and Martha (Sally Bretton) said they wanted to go back to their life in Shipton Abbott, Devon.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk and other press, Beyond Paradise bosses Tim Key and Tony Jordan admitted they have already started writing season two of the spin-off.

“I’ve started writing it, I’m not waiting to be commissioned,” Tony joked.

“We got loads of stories that didn’t make the cut in season one.

“But the main reason for doing it is Tim’s had this long-held ambition that I only discovered last week about filming on a steam train.”

Beyond Paradise has not only been given the green light for series two but also a Christmas special.

The series has proven to be one of the most popular dramas of the year, having attracted an audience of 8.7 million viewers for the first episode across 30 days.

Humphrey and Martha will both be returning to their roles, as well as, Ahmadi as DS Esther Williams, Dylan Llewellyn as PC Kelby Hartford, Felicity Montagu as Margo Martins and Barbara Flynn as Anne Lloyd.

Speaking about the news, Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, said: “I’m beyond excited to return to Shipton Abbott for both a Christmas special and second series of Beyond Paradise.

“The response from BBC viewers to series one has been a joy to see, and like its millions of fans I’m intrigued to find out what new mysteries lie in store for Humphrey, Martha and the team.”

Tim went on to add: “We’ve been blown away by the audience response to the show and are so happy that people have taken it to their hearts.

“We can’t wait to get our amazing cast back together to continue the story – and to be able to pay a visit to Shipton Abbott at Christmas is even better.”

When speaking about the importance of keeping the DNA of Death in Paradise in its spin-off, Tony said: “Tim’s brief was perfect.

“It was it’s got to be exactly the same as Death in Paradise and completely different. Which is what every writer wants to hear.

“So it’s exactly that, and the thing about Death in Paradise is, the team itself feels like a family.

“And actually, one of the key things to you is as a viewer is, I think you want to be there.

” I think you want to go and sit in Catherine’s bar at the end of it.”

“And so that was the first thing we wanted was to create that team, and that’s why this amazing team that’s here,” he added.

“That’s exactly why they were constructed in that way to make it feel like a family. So that was really important.

“The second thing that the people love about the mother show, if you like is the puzzle.

“So we knew we had to have a puzzle within the centre of that.”

Beyond Paradise is expected to return next year on BBC One.
