Earlier this year, fans of the ITV soap were heartbroken after learning that Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) will be leaving Emmerdale following her terminal cancer diagnosis. Next week, her battle will draw to an end as viewers will see one last emotional moment between her and son Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).
In June this year, Emmerdale fans watched as Faith confessed to her family she had terminal breast cancer following her disastrous birthday celebrations.
Despite having the reputation as the resident bad boy, viewers have seen a different side to Cain as the mother and son have worked on mending their broken relationship.
In emotional scenes, people learned that Cain hadn’t forgiven Faith for abandoning him as a child before the duo made amends following her imminent death.
Since then, the son has been trying to find hospice care for his mother to live out her final days, however, unbeknownst to her family Faith has decided to take control herself.
Faith revealed to her daughter-in-law Moira Dingle (Natalie Robb) that before her cancer takes her life, she plans on ending it herself.
In episodes set to air next week, Faith’s health will take a turn which means their planned trip may not be able to happen.
With Faith determined that their trip to the seaside will still go ahead, Cain tries to find a solution to please his mum.
Instead of travelling to the beach, her family, along with other residents in Emmerdale, decide to bring the seaside to the village.
Thrilled by the surprise, Faith takes everything that they’ve done in as she watches her family revel in the fun.
Delighted with how perfect the day is going, things only get better for her when old friend Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) arrives.
Squealing with happiness, Faith enjoys the rest of the event before viewers see her the next day alone in her room looking at memories from the day.
Switching off her phone, she prepares to end her life as she had discussed previously with her daughter-in-law.
Her son arrives at the home and when he realises what his mum has done, he’s left devastated as all he can do for Faith now is try and keep her comfortable as she drifts closer to her death.
Sally joined the ITV soap five years ago and has touched on how she feels about her character’s storyline coming to an end.
In an interview with TV Times earlier this year, the actress admitted she found it “devastating” leaving certain people on the show.
Touching on the heartbreaking storyline, she said: “I think [the storyline] is excellent. I haven’t read the scripts for her death, but I’m hoping it’s as positive as it can be. This isn’t just a story about cancer; it’s a wider story about family.”
Echoing her thoughts, actor Jeff spoke to ITV’s Lorraine about Sally’s exit from the show as he paid tribute to his soap mum.
He commented: “I’m so upset about losing Sally Dexter. There are a few actors who come onto the set and you just can’t take your eyes off them and what they do.
“We were doing something just last night and I was just mesmerised watching her. She’s so good and she’s just a joy to work with. She’s a great human being and I’m so sad we’re losing her.”
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
