Emmerdale spring preview: Revenge, two secrets explode, big return and disaster

Over the past few months, Emmerdale has been setting the fuse-light on some very juicy and scandalous secrets – this spring they are all about to explode, with a catastrophic series of ramifications.

It takes a lot to fool Kim Tate (Claire King), but sneaky Caleb Milligan (William Ash) and Nicky (Lewis Cope) are doing a good job – so far, anyway.

They have certainly underestimated how dangerous Kim is, so when she finds out about their plan – and find out she will – they are undoubtedly going to face a fearsome wrath.

They aren’t the only ones. Step forward new husband and new dad Mack Boyd (Lawrence Robb).

It’s only a matter of weeks before Charity Dingle’s (Emma Atkins) whole world is ripped into shreds as she discovers his secret, and we wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.

There’s an explosive few months to come, as our juicy preview shows.

From special episodes and surprise heartbreaks through to unexpected romances and a returning face from the past, here’s what’s coming up.

Kim’s colossal revenge

Since being revealed as the son of Frank Tate, Caleb’s intentions to destroy Kim and take her for everything she has got have been clear.

Teaming up with his own son Nicky, they have both wormed their way into Home Farm.

Show producer Jane Hudson told Metro.co.uk that Kim is going to unearth the truth before long – giving a timescale of between the coronation and Super Sop Week, an ITV campaign in autumn which sees Emmerdale and Coronation Street go all out with event led episodes.

This suggests that Kim and Caleb could be central to the October chaos, and it’s inevitable that Kim won’t take this lying down.

Prepare for dangerous and sinister Kim to rear her head, with dramatic consequences.

Moira is left ruined

It’s not just Kim who is targeted by Caleb, although at least he has slightly more remorse when it comes to Moira.

As part of his scheme to bring down Kim, he needs to win her trust fully, which means Moira and Butler’s Farm – land needed for Kim’s supposed stud farm project – are collateral damage.

‘How is Cain going to react when Caleb nearly sends Moira into financial ruin, which is a whole other story that’s playing,’ Jane teased.

‘When Cain finds out his brother is responsible, how on earth is that going to play out when these brothers are working so hard to try and have some sort of relationship. Is it all about to be doomed?’

Gabby’s wedding drama

So that’s Kim, Moira and Cain all set to have their lives wrecked by Caleb – but let’s not forget bride to be Gabby, who has no idea that her engagement is a sham.

As if that wasn’t enough, there is yet another bombshell to come, warned Jane.

‘There is still something else to find out, not all of the secrets have been revealed yet.

‘There is going to be somebody from Nicky’s past who turns up as well and we will be left wondering what this means for Gabby.

‘We know they’re planning a wedding – is that going to go off? Is it not going to go off?’

Charity discovers the truth

Charity thinks she finally has it made now she is married to Mack, but the truth about Chloe’s baby and Mack being the dad is about to explode, leaving her devastated.

As Mack has to deal with the fallout from all sides, how is Charity going to react?

It’s going to be as dramatic as you’d imagine.

‘It is very soon!’ Jane confirmed. ‘The big choice for Mack is going to be does he want to be a dad and does he want to be a husband, and can he be both or can he not be both?

‘How is Charity going to respond? We know she is fiery.

‘And can Chloe remain in the village when this secret comes out? Because it’s not going to be nice when you’ve got the wrath of the Dingles.’

A blast from the past for Belle

A former face heads home to the village after a decade’s absence as Tom King, son of Carl, rocks up.

A vet – so you know where he’s going to end up – he soon catches up with his ex Belle, and sparks fly.

Is he genuine?

‘Absolutely!’ declared newcomer James Chase, who plays him.

‘I think he’s very nervous to finally meet her again and speak to her again because it’s been so long and there are some very raw emotions there because he really did love her and cared for her.

He’s scared to see her again because the people you love, there are a lot of emotions there and it’s not so easy just to go up and say hi.’

Paddy looks to the future

After an emotional start to the year for Paddy, Emmerdale will continue to explore his recovery, leading to a special episode which sees him attend an outside men’s group which gives them a space to open up about their mental health.

The episode is described as ‘poignant’ and will see Paddy take another step as part of the ongoing journey.

Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw said: ‘We’ve already seen Paddy speaking to his GP, being prescribed medication, going for counselling and talking to his friends and family, to help him with his struggling mental health.

‘Our research showed that in addition to these things, many people find it easier to talk to strangers about their problems and so we wanted to show Paddy doing just that – opening up in a different environment and talking to strangers.

‘It was vitally important to us that we portrayed these scenes authentically, hence the scenes were shot on location at a real Andy’s Man Club venue and AMC carefully and brilliantly guided us through scripting and filming the scenes so they were as true to life as possible.

‘We hope if anyone watching is feeling like Paddy, like they can’t talk to friends or family, they might be encouraged by these scenes to reach out to their own local club for help and support.’

And beyond that, there is also the matter of how the landscape lies with Chas.

Jane added: ‘We follow Paddy’s journey as he tries to co-parent with Chas and navigate that new landscape, which is not easy.

‘What happens if new relationships start? We know Paddy and Mandy have a history, we know that they’ve had a more recent history again, but is paddy ready for a relationship?

‘And if he is, is Mandy the person to start that relationship with? I think there’s plenty to watch with Paddy as he continues his journey.’

A surprise new direction for Liam

Endearing local GP Liam appears to have a new love interest on the horizon, but it’s a story that’s set to be one with some unique and quirky differences, as you’d expect.

‘It’s more light-hearted story with Liam – our Dr Cavanagh, or should we be saying Dr Love?’ Jane said.

‘There’s going to be something that I think will take you all by surprise and it starts of as quite a fun story but at the heart of it there is something serious which will come out further down the line.

‘But it’s a great story. We’ll see Liam and another character in a way we’ve perhaps not seen them before, so I can’t wait for you to watch that.’

Cruel heartbreak for Mary

But while there seems to be some romantic luck coming for Liam, the same isn’t the case for Mary, who is going to have her heart split in two by current squeeze Faye, who isn’t who she seems.

‘We’ve got a lovely love story playing on screen with Mary.’ We see Mary falling in love with Faye and it’s Mart’s first relationship since coming out. She’s been really vulnerable and she’s really put herself out there and unfortunately it’s not going to be a happy ending. Mary is going to have her heart broken.

‘I think what’s really relevant for this story is how easy it is to be scammed, how easy it is to be taken in, how easy it is for love to stop you thinking logically.

‘I think it doesn’t matter what age you are, we’re all vulnerable to be tricked and to be scammed and to be catfished.

‘It’s a really heartbreaking story and Louise is just brilliant and she plays it so brilliantly. There’s a lovely humour but then there’s such sadness. I think you’re all going to enjoy that story.’

Baby drama for Rhona

Since her ex Gus came back into her life and made the request to use embryos they’d had frozen when together, Rhona was thrown.

But despite her eventually coming to a decision that she isn’t comfortable with this, the story has a way to go, Jane confirmed.

‘There is a long way to go with that story. It’s one of those stories that when you think it’s ended it probably hasn’t. It’s a fascinating story and I think Zoe is a brilliant actress.

‘We always want to find the next big story and I think this is Rhona’s next big story. It’s going to be one that really captures the viewers.’

A stunt, another wedding and a return

So what else is planned? Jane had some other teasers.

‘You all know we love a summer wedding. You’ve just watched a brilliant wedding but I can tell you there is another wedding – at least one – coming up before we get to the end of summer. I won’t tell you who.

‘One of the weddings will be more traditional than Charity and Mackenzie’s, I can tell you that. There will be no A Team wigs or vans.

‘And we’ll be having a familiar face returning before the end of summer. I think the audience will be absolutely delighted when this familiar face makes a return to the show. They’ll be in the show hopefully for the foreseeable.’

Winding even further ahead, the aforementioned Super Soap Week is known for big set pieces, and this year’s sounds like it won’t be breaking that tradition.

Jane said: ‘I was working on it late last night with my producer when we should have been going to bed – not together, in our separate houses – and we started getting a bit giddy with ideas and started messaging each other.

‘Then I woke up at 3am having had a dream that somebody was trying to break my neck and I actually jumped up in bed. I keep a pad next to my bed and a pen, and I thought I’ve got to write down some ideas.

‘Nobody’s getting their neck broken but I was just in that world of going stories, something’s happening… So at 3am I was scribbling.

‘Super Soap Week traditionally has a stunt in it, but we are still at the very early stages. We’re in my ‘dream head’ state at the moment. But it will be brilliant because it always is.’
