In upcoming Emmerdale episodes Mandy Dingle (Lisa Riley) sets out to cheer up her best friend Paddy (Dominic Brunt), who has been suffering since the revelations about Chas (Lucy Pargeter)’s affair and their subsequent split.
A heart-to-heart over several cups of tea and a few bottles of wine turns into a charged moment between them, as Lisa Riley explained.
‘They just start talking about day trips they had in Blackpool,’ she said.
‘It’s full nostalgia. And then their song comes on, which is Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got To Do With It, and Mandy’s fighting and fighting. They’re locking eyes and Mandy is going, “No.” Mandy doesn’t want to be a doormat again.
‘She’s always been a doormat when it comes to relationships and she refuses, because she knows it’s not right and I think in the back of her head she can also hear the rest of the family going, “Mandy, don’t do it.” But when Tina Turner comes on they think it’s a sign, someone’s telling them.’
Tina Turner may be firmly behind a Mandy and Paddy reunion, but she’s not the only one, according to Lisa.
‘The nation wants them to [get back together]!’ she insisted.
‘All over social media, it’s what they want. What we did realise was when the pandemic hit everybody was watching Paddy and Mandy on the lunchtime and they just loved it. That generation weren’t even born. We have this whole generation of teenagers watching the nostalgia show and they loved that relationship that the writers set up all those many, many years ago.’
Whether things will actually play out as the audience want is another question and Lisa compared Mandy and Paddy to another famous couple.
‘Who knows what’s going to happen in the future?’ she teased.
‘All I can say is me and Dom go back to being kids and we adore working together and I think that comes across. The directors say it. But do we want to give the audience exactly what they want straight away? Everybody loved Ross and Rachel, didn’t they?’
Will they get back together? A question we don’t know the answer to just yet, but one we know for certain is that their evening catching up will lead to Mandy and Paddy sleeping together.
Brace yourself for Chas’ reaction…
