Emmerdale stars explain Chas and Charity's chaotic food fight

The rivalry between Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) ramps up in upcoming Emmerdale episodes, with the cousins going head-to-head as Chas ruins the reopening of the Woolpack by organising a rival event – the wedding party for Vinny (Bradley Johnson) and Liv (Isobel Steele) at the B&B.

And, as Lucy Pargeter and Emma Atkins explained to Metro.co.uk and other press, when Charity goes to confront her cousin it all ends in a massive food fight.

‘Charity’s smug, Chas is devastated, then it swaps again, so it’s like one-upmanship,’ says Emma of the day’s events, adding that Charity is ‘utterly devastated’ when she learns about the wedding party.

‘It’s like how many family members can we get in each venue so it becomes a family struggle to see who can get the most family at their event,’ says Lucy.

Emma says that other people get involved in disrupting the cousins’ respective plans. ‘There’s somebody meddling with things. Someone overhears Charity being devastated by the situation and how it’s potentially going to be detrimental to the opening of the Woolpack, so he gets himself involved and he causes a bit of disruption, which leads to Chas having to relocate and then something happens in the relocation. Then all hell breaks loose and it culminates in this massive, ridiculous, chaotic row.’

Charity is on the warpath and goes to the Village Hall – where Chas’s event has been relocated – to have it out with her. As she walks in, the mystery meddler turns on the sprinkler system, drenching the cousins and ruining the party. Then an enraged Charity grabs a handful of Lydia’s home-made potato salad and rubs it in Chas’s face.

Emma describes the scene. ’Chas turns round and says what are we going to do now? And Charity’s retort is why don’t you try shutting your gob? And she grabs something and just goes to literally do something really awful.’

‘Fills her face!’ Lucy laughs.

‘And the reaction that Lucy did on the day, I will take it to my grave,’ Emma says. ‘It was so funny, and during tea break she went, oh I’m going to get you, to me and I thought what’s she going to do? Because a lot of it was improvised.’

‘During this fight I did manage to tip an entire bowl of melted chocolate on her head,’ Lucy says. It wasn’t just Emma who ended up covered in chocolate either.

‘My kids thought I smelled amazing when I got home,’ Lucy adds.

‘I had a shower, washed my hair and went home and there was still loads in my ears and my earrings. I put my earrings on and they were still caked in it a week later.’
